SEATTLE – Zach Bruce paced a balanced attack with 14 points Friday, leading Western Washington to a 72-58 non-conference men's basketball win over Cal State Monterey Bay on the first day of the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic at Brougham Pavilion.
Derrick Webb and Andrew Ready tallied 12 points apiece for the Vikings, who improved their record to 4-1. Nine of the 10 players who saw action for WWU scored at least one basket.
Keith Wilson led all scorers with 20 points for Monterey Bay, which also got 10 from Brandon Ward. CSUMB evened its record at 1-1.
The Otters claimed their final lead of the game at 10-9 on two Warren Freeman free throws with 15:09 left in the first half. WWU netted the next eight points, the first and last baskets coming on layins by Ready. That ignited a 12-2 run that gave the Vikings a 23-12 lead with 8:46 left until halftime.
The advantage grew to as many as 22 points before Western settled on a 43-23 halftime margin.
Western turned back every attempted rally as the final 14-point margin was the closest the Otters got in the second half.
Morris Anderson grabbed 10 rebounds to lead a 49-39 WWU advantage on the boards.
The Vikings shot 50 percent in the first half (16-of-32), while limiting Monterey Bay to 22 percent (8-of-37). The Otters shot better in the second half, using 44-percent accuracy (12-of-27) to raise their game mark to 31 percent (20-of-64). WWU finished at 39 percent for the game (24-of-61).
The two teams remain in Seattle for the second and final day of the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic. WWU meets Dominican University of California on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Cal State Monterey clashes with host Seattle Pacific at 7 p.m.
