SEATTLE – Morris Anderson played all 40 minutes and had 20 points to lead five double-figure scorers for Western Washington, which used a late surge Saturday to put away Dominican of California 87-72 during the final day of the men's basketball Sodexo Tip-Off Classic at Brougham Pavilion.
The Vikings (5-1) won their fourth straight game, including a 72-58 decision over Cal State Monterey Bay in the opening round of the tournament.
Dominican (0-3), a first-year NCAA Division II member from San Rafael, Calif., is still seeking its first win after falling 81-63 against host Seattle Pacific on Friday.
The Penguins trimmed a 12-point second-half deficit to 66-65 on two Bryan Austin free throws with 5:36 left to play. WWU responded with 11 straight points to ignite a 21-6 closing run. Derrick Webb and Harold McAllister each tallied seven points during the decisive game-ending spree.
Anderson contributed nine assists, six steals, four rebounds and three steals for the Vikings. Zach Bruce scored 18 points for WWU, which also got 16 from Webb, and 10 apiece from McAllister and Rory Blanche.
Austin led all scorers with 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting for the Penguins. Teammates Alex Ward and Killian Larson each netted 10.
WWU led the entire game, starting with a 19-4 run in the opening six minutes that was keyed by eight points from Bruce.
The lead remained at 15 points, at 25-10 with 11:32 left in the first half when Dominican began chipping away at the margin. The Penguins drew within 35-29 on a jumper by Tyler Sokol with 3:57 left in the first half.
Dave Vanderjagt hit a jumper at the buzzer to push the WWU lead to 44-34 at halftime.
Seattle Pacific hosts Cal State Monterey Bay at 7 p.m. tonight in the final game of the Sodexo Classic.
