SEATTLE – Juanise Cornell and Brittany Long each scored 19 points Saturday, combining for over half of Colorado Christian's points in a 70-58 women's basketball win over Central Washington on the final day of the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic at Brougham Pavilion.
The Cougars (1-3) picked up their first win of the season after losing to host Seattle Pacific 90-53 on Friday.
CWU (0-2), which lost 88-72 to Humboldt State in the opening round of the Sodexo tournament, remained winless.
Bre McBeth joined her high-scoring teammates in double figures with 11 points. Cornell grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Cougars' 48-40 advantage on the boards.
Brittany Duerr was the lone CWU double-figure scorer with 18 points. Shaina Afoa added seven points and 10 rebounds.
Sophie Russell made a layup for the opening basket, giving the Wildcats their only lead of the game. Colorado answered with eight straight points, capped by a three-point play from McBeth.
Russell converted a pair of free throws to draw Central within 22-19 with 9:15 left in the first half. The Cougars scored the next 10 points, including two 3-pointers by Long, to take control of the game.
The Cougars' lead, which extended to as many as 17 points during the second half, never got under seven points after the 10-point run gave them a 32-19 lead with 5:34 left until halftime.
Humboldt State and Seattle Pacific meet today at 5 p.m. for the tournament title.
