LAKE STEVENS, Wash. – All three Seattle Pacific women’s entries medaled, including the second varsity four crew that won its race, Saturday at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference (NCRC) Championships on Lake Stevens.
The Falcons rallied to stage a near boat-length victory in the women’s second varsity four-oared competition, completing the 2,000-meter course in 8-minutes, 11.12-seconds. Humboldt State finished second in 8:14.09 and Puget Sound was third in 8:25.28.
“That was a big come-from-behind win from our women's jayvee four, really great stuff,” exclaimed SPU coach Keith Jefferson.
The other two SPU women’s crews placed third in their respective races. The varsity eight clocked a time of 7:33.95 to finish behind defending national champion Western Washington (7:24.54) and Puget Sound (7:32.79).
The SPU varsity four posted a third-place time of 8:00.42 to trail Willamette (7:51.70) and Western Washington (7:54.95).
“Overall, our women fared well enough, the varsity eight showing the biggest improvement,” Jefferson said. “We got past Willamette finally and to be just one second off UPS, the third-ranked Division II crew, and single digits off of Western despite it not being their best performance bodes well.”
The Falcons men registered two fourth-place performances and one fifth. SPU was fourth in the varsity four competition with a time of 7:20.74. Puget Sound won that race (6:59.62) followed by Western Washington (7:09.28) and Lewis & Clark (7:18.94).
The men’s novice four event was won by Puget Sound in 7:30.26. Lewis & Clark was second (7:31.31), WWU third (7:36.08) and SPU fourth (7:40.58).
The SPU men’s second varsity four had a fifth-place time of 7:54.09. Puget Sound’s “B” crew won that race (7:21.08) followed by Lewis & Clark (7:26.36), UPS “A” (7:28.96) and Willamette (7:30.46).
“Those were tough races for the guys,” said Jefferson. “They rowed well, although they said it was not their best. Western and UPS are tough competition. Both are very deep and quite fast.”
The Falcons, who had boats entered in just six of the 18 races, finished sixth in the overall team standings. They were fifth in the women’s team standings and sixth in the men’s. Western Washington finished atop the team standings in all three categories.
The NCRC is comprised of seven NCAA Division II and Division III member institutions within the northwest region. SPU is joined by Humboldt State, Lewis & Clark, Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Western Washington, and Willamette. The conference championship venue alternates between Lake Stevens and Lake Vancouver and is the precursor to advancing to the WIRA Championships.
The NCRC regatta is the first of four championship events for the Falcons, who still look forward to competing at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships, Dad Vail Regatta (men) and NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships.
The next action for the Seattle Pacific rowers is May 2-3 at the WIRA Championships on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
“This was a good championship primer for WIRA in two weeks,” Jefferson concluded. “We will be working hard to shave off seconds and will need it when we go down south.”
