Taylor is Fifth in All-Around for 3rd-Place SPU

SPU women post best bars and beam scores for 188.100 team score

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sophomore Samantha Taylor finished fifth in her inaugural outing as an all-arounder Friday and Seattle Pacific placed third in a women's gymnastics tri meet won by sixth-ranked Oregon State at Gill Coliseum.

The Beavers claimed the top-two all-around places and won the team competition with a season-high score of 196.225. Fifth-ranked Stanford posted a second-place point total of 195.775 and the Falcons were third at 188.100.

SPU, the only NCAA Division II team in the field, ranks No. 58 in the national rankings dominated by Division I competitors. The Falcons registered season-high scores in the uneven bars (47.375) and balance beam (45.950).

Taylor (San Carlos, Calif.) compiled an all-around score of 37.50, including a 9.475 on vault, 9.65 on bars, 9.075 on beam and 9.30 on floor. She placed 11th in the bars competition, tying for the best finish by a Falcon in any event.

Sophomore Sherah Veron was SPU's top performer on the floor (9.575) and vault (9.55), finishing 11th and 13th, respectively.

OSU teammates Mandi Rodriguez (39.475) and Makayla Stambaugh (39.375) were the meet's top all-arounders. Stanford's Carly Janiga (39.150) was third in the all-around followed by teammate Shelley Alexander (39.125).

SPU junior Anissa Madrid (Seattle, Wash./Kennedy HS) had a sixth-place all-around total of 37.275. She received a score of 9.50 on vault and 9.45 on floor.

Freshman Stephanie Wagner (Estacada, Ore.) was the Falcons' top beam performer with a 12th-place score of 9.475 that topped her previous collegiate best.

OSU's Rodriguez finished first on floor (9.90) and tied for top honors on vault (9.90) with Stanford's Shelley Alexander.

Laura-Ann Chong claimed first place on bars (9.925) for the Beavers and teammate Leslie Mak tied atop the beam field (9.875) with Stanford's Stambaugh.

Two Falcons recorded their career-high scores on the bars. Junior Betsy Snook (Milwaukee, Ore.) scored 9.575 and sophomore Stephanie Cabrera (Billings, Mont.) had a 9.525.

The SPU gymnasts continue their stretch of eight straight road competitions by traveling to California next week for a dual meet with UC Davis on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.
