SEATTLE PACIFIC QUOTES
Coach Chuck Sekyra
General Comments:
"First off hats off to Montana State Billings for having an amazing season. I thought their kids battled, really believed and gave us everything we could handle. Playing any team like them a third time is not an easy task and I liked how our kids handled it. We played great soccer today and created a lot of chances. I thought it was the best we played out of all three games against them, and we had to to beat them. I'm very proud of our players. It's nice to move on to the Sweet 16 and maybe head to a familiar place in Missouri that we were at a couple years ago."
On Kelsey Jenkins free kick goal:
"Amazing. That was fantastic. What a dead ball. What a strike. She had a hand in both goals, drawing the PK as well. We created a lot of chances today, but K.J. played a huge part in both our goals. I like the position we moved her to, she's getting the ball a lot more and being dangerous."
On goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson:
"Maddie is brilliant. She is the best goalkeeper to play in the history of our program. Maddie was sick all week. For her to step up, coming off an illness, and play like that says a lot about her and just how much this season and our goals to be the best in the country mean to her. I was very proud of her, but I've seen it all year. She's great. Our team has a lot of confidence in her and so do I. She definitely keeps me from getting too nervous."
Junior Midfielder Kelsey Jenkins
General Comments:
"We were excited to come out and play today in the second round of tournament. It was nice that we got the No. 1 seed and were able to sort of see Billings Thursday night play and rest our legs a bit. We kind of sorted some things out tactically. It's tough to beat any team three times, much less a team that's on a roll like Billings. They had a great season, first time in the tournament, got their first win on Thursday. It was really exciting. We were really excited to be here. We came out with a lot of energy. We knew they were going to come out and battle. It was good for us to come out and match that intensity, match that energy. We had a good performance overall."
On her 23-yard free kick for a goal in the 35th minute:
"Free kick, just outside the 18, sort of on the right side of the 18. I knew it was good positioning, a good look. I stepped up and sort of bent the ball around the near post, upper 'V'. It was a good strike and I'm glad it went in."
On where she wanted to put the free kick:
"For the most part, keepers put the wall to cover their near post so that they can take the far post away. I knew she would sort of be leaning toward the far post, thinking that the wall had it covered. I was lucky enough to get a good strike and sort of bend it around the wall to a place that she wasn't."
On how many times out of 10 she scores on that free kick:
"Not very often – not a strike like that. It was definitely one to remember. I'm definitely not going to hit that shot a lot of times in my life."
Senior Goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson
General Comments:
"I'm so proud of our team today. We really came out with one of our most complete games today. I'm so proud we played a full 90-minute game and never let up. Our defense and our offense too never let down. We knew from the start we were going to come to play and weren't going to have anything else than a win."
On her huge second-half save of a shot by Carly Valentine with 10:41 to play:
"In the second half, the girl came in and went inside to the post. My defender did a great job of showing her the far post. It was an easy read from there. It's mostly my defense that does a great job that makes my job the easiest part."
On advancing to the round of 16:
"I'm so excited, so excited to give the opportunity to the freshmen and the other players who haven't been to the Sweet 16 yet. It's going to be the team that wants it the most, and we're ready to answer the call."
MONTANA STATE BILLINGS QUOTES
Coach Don Trentham
General Comments:
"I thought it was important that we didn't give up the first goal today. It was a great goal by Kelsey (Jenkins). It was just a great finish. I don't think our keeper could have done anything about it. We had a great game on Thursday. Having to turn around on Saturday and do it against one of the best teams in the country, we knew it would be tough. We were tired in the second half and playing a heck of a team."
On having chances:
"Even when game was 0-0, I think Jaucelyn (Richter) got in behind, and Maddie (Dickinson) made a great save. That shows why she is the Defensive Player of the Year in our conference. When it was 1-0, Carly (Valentine) got in, made a good shot and Maddie was there to cover it. They made some saves and scored their chances, and we didn't."
On the Yellowjackets season as a whole:
"As a program, I think we've been working hard for 15 years and my nine years here to get to the NCAA tournament. A lot of players and coaches and administrators played a part in getting us here. It was exciting for us to win that first game. We worked 15 years to get into the tournament, and sometimes, it takes another five years to win their first game.
"As I told the players, they have nothing to put their heads down about. A fantastic group of players, took big steps here to get to this tournament. Eventually, at the end of the day, there's only one team that leaves without a loss, and it's the national champions. We'll build on this. It has been a great season for us. We're headed in the right direction, and we'll use this as momentum going into next season.
