Melissa Reich led four double-figure scorers with 17 points for 13th-ranked Seattle Pacific, but the Falcons were unable to overtime a lopsided free throw disparity in a 68-59 quarterfinal loss to No. 6 Fort Lewis on Tuesday in the NCAA Division II women's basketball tournament at St. Joseph Civic Arena.
The West Region champion Falcons completed their season with a 27-4 record. Fort Lewis (34-3) advances to the national semifinals.
SPU shot 50 percent for the game (25 of 50), but managed only five points from the free throw line in eight total tries. The Skyhawks had an 18-point advantage from the line, hitting 23 of 30 charity shots.
After trailing by as many as 10 points in the second half, SPU rallied to take a brief lead.
Melissa Reich's layup with 7:06 left to play put the Falcons ahead 52-51. It was their first lead since a 14-10 edge with 12:11 left in the first half.
The Skyhawks responded by scoring the next seven points en route to a 17-7 game-closing run. Alison Rosel ignited the surge with a layup at 6:11 and made a steal, giving Fort Lewis the ball. Laura Haugen capped that possession with a 3-pointer at 5:22.
Audrey George converted two free throws with 4:19 remaining that put the Skyhawks ahead for good at 58-53.
Maddie Maloney scored 12 points for the Falcons, who also got 11 from
Daesha Henderson and 10 from
Nyesha Sims.
Fort Lewis was led by the 19 points of Katie Mackey. Haugen finished with 16 points and Rosel added 12.
The Falcons trailed for most of the first half, but drew within 31-27 at halftime on a runner in the lane by
Caitlyn Rohrbach at the buzzer.
