SEATTLE -- Freshman Amanda Alvarez, who posted an NCAA Division II outdoor provisional qualifying mark in the triple jump last Saturday, has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for women's track.
Alvarez (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS), flew 39 feet, 0¼ inches at the season-opening UPS Outdoor Preview on the University of Puget Sound campus in Tacoma. That ranked as the second-longest triple jump in GNAC history. Only Alaska Anchorage's Kim Brady, who went 39-3¾ in 2008, has gone farther.
It also was a personal best for Alvarez, and was an automatic qualifying distance for the GNAC championships. Alvarez went 38-4 during the indoor season, making the NCAA provisional qualifying list for the winter season.
Alvarez' performance led a 1-2-3-4 Seattle Pacific in the triple jump at UPS. She also went 17-7 in the long jump, as did freshman teammate Trinna Miranda. (Miranda got first place on the basis of fewer attempts.) That also was good for GNAC automatic qualifying.
