SEATTLE – Eight home games and a three-game trip to Hawaii highlight the 18-game schedule for the Seattle Pacific women's soccer team that was announced Tuesday by Coach
Chuck Sekyra.
The 2010 season opens at home on Friday, Sept. 3 against Humboldt State. Kick-off is 4:30 p.m. at Interbay Stadium.
The opener is the only out-of-conference home game for the Falcons, who meet their three other non-league opponents in Honolulu. SPU plays Hawaii-Hilo on Sept. 6, BYU-Hawaii on Sept. 8 and Hawaii Pacific on Sept. 11.
This marks the second straight season the Falcons encounter BYU-Hawaii. They beat the Seasiders 1-0 last year in Seattle.
“Hopefully Hawaii is a paradise as far as how we play as well,” quips Sekyra, who starts his eighth season as head coach. He directed the Falcons into the NCAA Division II Tournament in each of his previous seven seasons, including the 2008 national championship.
After the Hawaii trip, SPU returns home to begin Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Sept. 16 against Montana State Billings.
The defending conference champion Falcons play their final three GNAC games at home, capped by a Nov. 6 contest against Central Washington.
“As usual every game counts. You want to get that first or second seed for the postseason and set up your success for the NCAA Tournament by getting one of those byes,” says Sekyra.
“We've got some great opponents so we want to make sure we take care of business and hopefully sit exactly where we want to be sitting by the end of the year. We want to start off with a bang, to start off strong and finish even stronger.”
Tickets for SPU soccer games can be purchased at Interbay Stadium (3027 17th Ave. W., Seattle 98119) on game day. Ticket windows open one hour prior to kickoff. All seats are general admission, priced at $6 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. SPU students and staff are admitted free.
Discounted group rates can be arranged by calling in advance to the SPU Athletics Ticket Office at: 206-281-2085.
Last season, SPU won the league title with a 9-2-1 record. The Falcons, who were ranked No. 1 nationally for six weeks, finished with a 16-3-2 record and participated in the postseason for the seventh straight season.
Eight starters return from that team, including senior goalkeeper
Maddie Dickinson (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview). She was honored as an all-region selection after recording nine shutouts and a 0.57 goals against average.
The defense is anchored by sophomore defender
Taylor Sawyer (Gig Harbor, Wash./North Mason) who garnered All-America accolades after her rookie season.
The offense features junior midfielder
Kelsey Jenkins (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) who netted five goals and distributed a team-high eight assists. Sophomore forward
Megan Lindsay ranked second on the team with six goals in 2009.
