SEATTLE – Anissa Madrid of Seattle Pacific posted a career-high score on the balance beam as the Falcons opened their women's gymnastics season on Friday night against Illinois State in Brougham Pavilion.

The Redbirds outscored SPU, 189.600 to 186.200.

“It's a good opening for us, seeing as we didn't have all of our top people in all of our events,” said Falcons head coach Laurel Tindall. “We're kind of playing with our lineup a little bit this weekend, giving a lot of people an opportunity to compete.”

SPU senior Madrid (Seattle/Kennedy HS), a national runner-up and an All-American on the beam last season, put together a no-fall routine that merited a 9.825 from the judges. That eclipsed her previous best mark of 9.800.

Madrid's score was the best of the night on the beam for the Falcons. She also wound up with the top all-around total in the meet, finishing with 37.85 points. Madrid edged Illinois State's Kim Genereux, who totaled 37.70.

“Anissa's beam routine obviously was awesome,” Tindall said. “Unfortunately she was the only one who stuck on beam.”

Falcons junior Sherah Veron (Broken Arrow, Okla.) joined Madrid on the winner's podium, turning her high-energy routine into the night's leading score of 9.825 on the floor exercise. Fellow SPU junior Aditi Kulkarni (Lakewood, Colo.) earned a tie for second place with Illinois State's Apollonia Barrientos, scoring 9.625.

The floor was Seattle Pacific's top team score of the night at 47.075. The Falcons also had a solid evening on uneven bars, finishing with 47.200.

Madrid registered a second-place score of 9.65 on the bars and senior teammate Laura Willis (Temecula, Calif.) was fourth with a mark of 9.55.

SPU compiled a team score of 46.45 on the vault and 45.475 on the beam.

Friday's meet marked the collegiate debut of Kai Tindall, the daughter of 36th-year SPU coach Laurel Tindall. A Falcons freshman, Kai competed on the beam and received a score of 8.925.

Kai's debut came 36 years after her mother Laurel competed for the Falcons and won the 1974 national vault championship.

“I've coached (Kai) for a long time and she always makes me very nervous. She still makes me nervous and that's probably not going to change ever,” Coach Tindall described. “She's been in gymnastics forever and it's real different to see her as part of the team.”

SPU, coming off a seventh-place finish in last season's USA Gymnastics Collegiate nationals, and Illinois State will see each other again on Saturday when they join Boise State and the University of Washington in UW's Edmundson Pavilion at 7 p.m.

The next home meet for SPU is Jan. 28 against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival UC Davis.
