SEATTLE – Senior
Anissa Madrid put together a season-best all-around performance, freshman
Bryn Larson had a pair of career-high marks, and Seattle Pacific logged three season-best event totals and a season-high overall total in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's gymnastics showdown against UC Davis.
Led by Madrid's all-around score of 38.475, SPU finished with 191.15 points in Brougham Pavilion on Friday night, beating its previous best of 190.425 from just last Saturday at Air Force. UC Davis won Friday's dual meet with 192.375 points.
Davis and Seattle Pacific finished 1-2 at the MPSF championship meet last March in Brougham.
The Falcons tallied season-bests of 47.875 points on the vault, 48.05 on the uneven parallel bars and 48.275 on the floor exercise. It was SPU's first time in the 48s this season on both the bars and floor.
Madrid (Seattle/Kennedy HS) exceeded her previous season-high all-around total of 37.85 from the opener against Illinois State on Jan. 14. Friday's numbers included a 2011 best of 9.625 on the vault, tying her for fifth place with teammate Corinne Wise (Seattle/West Seattle HS). Wise's score was a career-best for her. Madrid's top mark of the night was 9.70 on the floor, good for sixth overall. Her top placing was third on the balance beam with a 9.60.
The pair of career bests for Larson (Westminster, Colo.) came on the vault (9.525) and bars (9.40).
The Falcons had five individual career highs altogether, with three on the bars. Joining Larson with best-ever performances were senior
Betsy Snook (Milwaukie, Ore.) with a 9.775, and senior
Jennifer Lehman (Edgewood, Wash./Cascade Christian HS) with a 9.70.
Snook was the Falcons lone event winner. Her first-place bars score of 9.775 was the best by an SPU gymnast this season and eclipsed her previous career-high mark in that event (9.575) by two-tenths of a point. The Aggies' Jessica Rea was second on the bars at 9.750 and SPU's Lehman was third (9.700).
SPU junior
Aditi Kulkarni (Lakewood, Colo.) and senior teammate
Bri Steigauf (Richfield, Minn.) were part of a three-way tie for third on the floor with a 9.725.
After a strong effort on the beam at Air Force with five out of six no-fall routines, the Falcons had four more no-fall performances on Friday.
Marcy Miller compiled a first-place all-around total of 38.800 and UC Davis teammate Stacey Nicolini was third at 38.000.
The Aggies had three events winners, led by Anna Shumaker who topped the field in the vault (9.80) and beam (9.75). Michelle Ho received a score of 9.825 on the floor to win that event.
SPU, which is No. 8 in this week's USA Gymnastics national collegiate rankings, is back home next Friday night at 7 p.m. against the University of Washington.
