SEATTLE -- Central Washington sophomore Lacy Haddock scored the game-winning basket with 5.7 seconds left in regulation as the men's basketball team upset third-ranked BYU-Hawaii 78-77 Friday afternoon in the GNAC/PacWest Challenge at Brougham Pavilion in Seattle.
Central rebounds from its first loss of the season to even its record at 1-1 on the season. BYU-Hawaii, last season's NCAA Division II runner up, falls to 0-2 on the season.
CWU saw a four-point lead with 2:40 left in the first half get erased by the Seasiders who ended the half on a 9-0 run to take a 34-27 lead going into halftime. BYU-Hawaii built an 11-point lead less than four minutes into the second half, but a 16-0 run by the Wildcats gave CWU a 59-55 advantage with nearly 10 minutes left in the contest.
The Wildcats led by as many as six-points in the second-half but a late rally by the Seasiders capped by a three-pointer by Junior Ale gave BYU-Hawaii a three-point advantage with 1:07 remaining. Central sophomore Kevin Davis answered with a tip-dunk with 43 seconds left. Central regained possession as they forced Seasiders guard Jet Chang to turn the ball over with 32 seconds left, leading to Haddocks lay in with 5.7 seconds on the clock. A last second shot by Chang rimmed off and the Wildcats walked away with the final 78-77 win.
Five different Wildcats scored in double figures led by Jody Johnson who had a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. The 17 caroms is the second highest single-game mark in the schools 14 year history of NCAA Division II play. Davis also recorded a double-double, his of the season, with 13 points and 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes of play. Junior Jordan Starr scored 12 points while fellow juniors Jordan Coby and Brandon Magee each had 11.
BYU-Hawaii got 21 points from pre-season All-American Jet Chang, 11 of which came from the free-throw line. Bracken Frank added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Seasiders including four steals. Ale and Brady Hurst also scored in double figures for the Seasiders with 13 and 10 points respectively.
