SEATTLE – They readily acknowledge that they're ready for a bit of a break. But first, the Seattle Pacific Falcons had one more women's basketball victory to put into the books.

Katie Benson pumped in 15 points and was one of four SPU players in double figures on Tuesday night as the Falcons downed Puget Sound in a non-conference contest in Brougham Pavilion, 71-60.

Seattle Pacific (4-1) won its fourth straight game and handed the NCAA Division III Loggers (2-1) their first loss.

Sophomore forward Benson (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish HS) also grabbed five rebounds.

Senior guard Nyesha Sims (Portland, Ore.) scored a season-high 13 points and had six boards. Senior guard Jordan Harazin (Colfax, Wash./Colfax HS) had 12 points, four rebounds and four assists in 16 productive minutes. Junior forward Rachel Murray (Eglington, New South Wales, Australia) also had 12 points.

Senior guard McKayla Gorman (Parker, Colo.) grabbed a career-high six rebounds and tied her career high with seven assists.

Including three no-counters, the Falcons have played eight games in a span of 25 days, starting with their exhibition opener at Washington State on Oct. 29.

“It has been super busy, but that has been fun for us because we love to play,” Harazin said. “We might be getting a little tired, but we have Thanksgiving break right now, so we're going to come back ready for the start of conference.”

When the Falcons do return to the competitive court on Thursday, Dec. 1, it'll be for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener at Simon Fraser in Burnaby, B.C. Seattle Pacific coach Julie Heisey agreed that a few days off for the holiday might be just what her team needs.

“The season is a journey, and the hard part of the journey is being able to be focused and be on the same page and be able to work through frustration and fatigue. Tonight, we had all of those things,” Heisey said. "When you're tired, it's hard to stay focused, and I challenged the girls that it's something we have to learn.

“But our practices have been good, and that gives me confidence – and you reap what you sow,” Heisey added.

Seattle Pacific scored the first four points of the game, never trailed and was never tied. The Falcons quickly built an 11-point lead at 14-3, and took a 35-22 advantage into halftime.

SPU built it to as many as 22 during the second half at 67-45 with just 5:05 left. Puget Sound went on a 15-2 run to get it below double digits at 69-60. But by then, just 58 seconds remained, and the Falcons got the game's final two points on a pair of free throws by junior guard Katie Thralls (Livermore, Calif.).

“Tonight, we had a lot of people who played really well,” Heisey said. “Nyesha and Betsy (Kingma) had super-strong games, Rachel was consistent, and Jordan had another good game.

“There were lots of good bright spots, and we have to build on that.”

Puget Sound was led by the 20 points of Kelsey McKinnis. Erin Stumbaugh added 10. But SPU kept the clamps on the Loggers' two biggest scoring threats. Senior guard Jocelyn Riordan was averaging 15.5 points, but was kept off the board entirely on 0-for-9 shooting. The Falcons also limited UPS junior post player Sarah Stewart to just three points and seven rebounds. She came in averaging a double-double of 13 points and 12.5 boards.
