SEATTLE –
Bri Steigauf led a sweep of the top four spots on the floor exercise, and Corinne Wise posted a career-high to win the balance beam, as Seattle Pacific won three of the four individual event titles, but fell barely short of Air Force in a women's gymnastics dual meet on Friday night in Brougham Pavilion.
Air Force, a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival, squeaked out a 188.475 to188.275 victory.
On Senior Night that honored her and four teammates, Steigauf (Richfield, Minn.) scored a 9.725 on the floor, as SPU racked up 48.15 points on that event to nearly wipe out Air Force's lead in the final rotation. Junior
Sherah Veron (Broken Arrow, Okla.) was second at 9.675, and teammates
Stephanie Wagner (Estacada, Ore.) and
Aditi Kulkarni (Lakewood, Colo.) tied for third at 9.65.
The visitors built a hefty 2.125-point lead after three events, but needed nearly all of it to hold on. SPU gained 1.925 points during the final rotation, outscoring Air Force's beam lineup 48.150 to 46.225 with the strong floor showing.
Wise (Seattle/West Seattle HS), an SPU junior, took the beam by scoring 9.75. That eclipsed her previous personal best score of 9.725, which she set in a meet at Air Force on Jan. 22. Wagner wound up third on the beam with a 9.55.
Veron started off the meet by winning the vault with a 9.675.
Air Force's only individual winner was Katie Hawthorne on the uneven parallel bars with a 9.675. SPU junior
Samantha Taylor (San Carlos, Calif.) placed second at 9.625.
Brittany Dutton of Air Force won the all-around with 37.55 points and her teammate Linnaea Hance was second at 37.200. SPU did not have an all-around competitor on Friday.
The teams were deadlocked after the first rotation (Seattle Pacific vault, Air Force uneven bars) with 47.675 points each. Air Force nudged in front by 1.125 points midway through the meet before extending that margin to 2.125 points going into the final rotation in which it finished on the beam while SPU was on the floor.
Honored along with Steigauf on Senior Night were
Jennifer Lehman (Edgewood, Wash./Cascade Christian HS),
Anissa Madrid (Seattle/Kennedy HS),
Betsy Snook (Milwaukie, Ore.) and
Laura Willis (Temecula, Calif.)
