SEATTLE – Talk about pulling together when faced with some adversity. The Seattle Pacific Falcons certainly did that on Friday night in their women's gymnastics meet against the crosstown-rival Washington Huskies.
Despite senior all-arounder
Anissa Madrid being scratched from the meet after she tweaked her ankle during warm-ups, the Falcons posted season-high totals on the vault and the floor exercise and got into the 190-point neighborhood for the third week in a row. SPU finished with 190.100 points, second to Washington's season-high mark of 195.800.
Seattle Pacific had three gymnasts set individual-event career highs, and saw four more tie career-best marks on various events.
"We had some great things happen tonight. We're really thankful to still be above a 190," said SPU coach
Laurel Tindall.
"We lost Anissa in warm-ups and that's our top all-around. We had to scramble a little bit to put people in her space, basically four different people covered her events."
The Falcons opened the meet on vault. Senior
Jennifer Lehman (Edgewood, Wash./Cascade Christian HS) came up with a 9.575, breaking her old mark of 9.375, and junior
Brittany Malone (Salinas, Calif.) earned a 9.525, better than her previous best of 9.5. Junior
Corrine Wise (Seattle/West Seattle HS) tied her vault career-high at 9.625.
Those performances set the stage for the best result of the night by an SPU gymnast. Junior
Sherah Veron (Broken Arrow, Okla.) received a score of 9.75 to equal her career-best and finish in a three-way tie for third place.
Veron was also outstanding on the floor with a season-best effort of 9.70.
"She's been doing great on those two events," Tindall said of Veron's vault and floor prowess. "She definitely is a mainstay in our lineup there and has some experience from nationals last year. She hit great."
SPU compiled 47.95 vault points to surpass its season high for the second week in a row, topping last week's 47.875 against UC Davis.
The Falcons struggled on the uneven parallel bars with just 45.725 points, but got back into sync on the balance beam, with four no-falls in six routines. That included a career-high score of 9.7 by freshman
Kai Tindall (Brier, Wash./Mountlake Terrace HS).
Tindall was the fourth SPU athlete on the beam, and she was followed by no-falls from junior
Aditi Kulkarni (Lakewood, Colo.) for a 9.575, and sophomore
Stephanie Wagner (Estacada, Ore.) with a 9.775 that was good for fourth place. Wise also went no-fall for a score of 9.65, and Seattle Pacific's total of 47.775 was its second-best of the season.
SPU finished with a flourish on the floor exercise with 48.65 points – beating its week-old season best of 48.275. Kulkarni led the way with a 9.775, and Wagner tied her career high with a 9.725. Junior
Texie Gregory (Auburn, Calif.) tied her career high at 9.65. Senior
Bri Steigauf (Richfield, Minn.), with a 9.75, and Lehman, with a 9.7, both had season bests.
Washington's Haley Bogart won the all-around competition, and Samantha Walior had one outright win on the balance beam and tied with teammate Ruby Engreitz for first place on the uneven parallel bars. Bogart, a Husky senior, finished with 39.00 points for the all-around win. Her top score of the night was a 9.825 on the floor exercise, good for second place.
UW senior Walior won the beam with a 9.85, and had a 9.90 to tie Engretiz for the top spot on the bars. Junior Amanda Cline won the vault for the Huskies at 9.85, and senior Kristen Linton took the floor with a 9.875.
SPU is back in the gym next Friday, visiting San Jose State in a four-way meet that also includes UC Davis and Boise State.
The next home meet for the Falcons is February 25 at 7 p.m. against Air Force.
