ELLENSBURG – Kishia Mitchell had just enough footspeed – and just enough lean at the wire – to win the 100-meter dash on Saturday at the Spike Arlt Invitational track and field meet.

A bit more of that footspeed, and she could find herself leaning right into the NCAA Division II championships.

Seattle Pacific freshman Mitchell came up with a pair of victories in Ellensburg. But it was her performance in the 100 that stood out, as her time of 12.10 seconds was enough to beat Sabrina Nettey by the bare minimum of one one-hundredth of a second and leave her just five hundredths shy of a D-2 provisional qualifying mark.

Mitchell (Puyallup, Wash./Rogers HS), who also captured the 200 meters, was one of four Falcon women's winners in the meet at Central Washington University, as SPU finished a solid second in the team standings. The host Wildcats won with 203.5 points; the Falcons wound up with 191.

Joining Mitchell as meet champions were sophomore Katy Gross (Everett, Wash./Cascade HS) in the high jump, sophomore Trinna Miranda (Tigard, Ore.) in the long jump, and junior Brittany Aanstad (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) in the javelin.

Mitchell's 12.10 clocking in the 100 was the second-fastest time in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history, trailing only the 11.90 recorded by former SPU star NyEma Sims in 2007. In fact, the Falcons now own the top three all-time 100-meter marks in the GNAC, with Latasha Essien's 12.11 from last season ranking third.

Mitchell's time in the 100 was nearly half a second better than her previous SPU career best of 12.51 set on March 19 at the Oregon Preview in Eugene. Going twice as far in her next race on Saturday, Mitchell also set a new PR in the 200 at 25.21 seconds, 15 hundredths faster than what she ran on April 2 at the JD Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma.

That put Mitchell into the No. 6 spot on the all-time GNAC list. Sims also leads that one with a 23.99, set in 2007. Prior to Saturday, Mitchell wasn't even among the top 10 in either event.

Sophomore Emily Quatier (Portland, Ore.) came up big in the 200, as well, posting a personal-best 25.77 to take third place and put herself onto the automatic qualifying list for next month's GNACs.

Trinna Miranda 2011

Miranda led a 1-2-3 sweep of the long jump for the Falcons, flying 17 feet, 3 ¼ inches / 5.26 meters. Aanstad was next in a personal-best 17-2 / 5.23 meters, and junior Natalie Nobbs (Yakima, Wash./Riverside Christian HS) came in third at 16-5 ¼ / 5.01 meters.

Brittany Aanstad 2011

Aanstad won the javelin at 141-5, an NCAA provisional qualifying toss, although two feet shy of her season best 143-5 that she threw on March 19 in Eugene. She added a second-place finish in the triple jump on Saturday, giving her 26 points for the day.

Katy Gross 2011

Gross cleared 5-2 ¼ / 1.58 meters to win the high jump. She also was busy elsewhere, taking fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, seventh in the javelin, and 19th in the 200.

Senior hurdler Jennnifer Pike put a pair of second-place finishes into the books. She ran a career-best 15.17 seconds in the 100s, moving into GNAC automatic status, and ran 1:06.43 in the 400s.

Senior pole vaulter Melissa Peaslee tied Central Washington's Becca Clark for the highest clearance of the day at 11-5 ¾ / 3.50 meters. Clark wound up with the nod for first place by having cleared an earlier height in fewer attempts. But for Peaslee, it was seven inches higher than her previous season best and left her four inches away from the NCAA provisional standard of 11-9 ¾ / 3.60 meters.

Seattle Pacific, ranked 24th nationally in Division II and fourth in the West Region, will split its squad next week, sending some to Eugene for the Oregon Relays on Friday and Saturday, and sending everyone else to Bellingham for Saturday's Western Washington Twilite meet – although this year, it will take playing during daylight hours, starting at 9:45 a.m. at Civic Stadium.
