ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Don't ask her how she knew. Cailin Fellows just knew it was going to be her night.

Fellows slammed a career-high 28 kills on Saturday, Madi Cavell had career-highs for kills and digs, and Shelby Swanson racked up a career-best 70 assists as the Seattle Pacific Falcons pulled out a five-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball victory at 22nd-ranked Central Washington.

Scores in Nicholson Pavilion were 32-30, 25-15, 22-25, 18-25, 15-9.

Senior outside hitter Fellows (Edmonds, Wash. / Edmonds-Woodway HS) beat her previous career high of 21 kills, which she set twice, most recently on Sept. 27 in a five-game loss to Central in Brougham Pavilion. She hit a solid .299 on Saturday.

“I had a feeling tonight was going to be a good night – but I had no idea to what extent,” Fellows said. “It was just really one of those nights where it felt like everything I had been working on for the past few weeks was really coming together. I've been wanting to break that 21-kill barrier for a while now.”

Added Falcons coach Chris Johnson, “Cailin was just fantastic – no two ways about it. And she had a greater passing responsibility tonight, and she really stepped up and passed well for us.”

Shelby Swanson mug 2012
Senior setter Swanson (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS) shattered her previous high of 60 assists, which she had on Sept. 7 in a five-gamer against Chico State. She came within six of the single-match conference record of 76, set by former SPU star Jenna Von Moos exactly seven years ago (Oct. 27, 2005) against Western Washington.

Swanson made it a double-double with 23 digs, giving her 11 double-doubles for the season and 28 for her career.

Sophomore opposite/middle blocker Cavell (Keizer, Ore.) had 16 kills and 17 digs. Her previous bests were 13 and 12, respectively. It was her second career double-double.

Breanne Wiekamp mug 2012
Freshman Breanne Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) tied her career high with 29 digs after taking over at the libero spot when sophomore Brianna Leenders went out with an injury late in the second game.

Junior middle blocker Nikki Lowell (Claremont, Calif.) added 16 kills, six block assists, and hit a team-leading .429 for SPU.

The Falcons (10-11, 7-5 GNAC) were down 2-1 in the deciding fifth game, then ran off three straight points to go in front for good at 4-2. They stretched it to five points at 8-3, and never let the Wildcats (15-7, 9-4 GNAC) get closer than three points after that.

Seattle Pacific fought off three game points in the opener to pull it out, 32-30, then hit at a .516 clip in the second game to win that one handily. SPU was up 11-6 in the third when Central caught a spark and got back into the match. The Wildcats tied it with a Game 4 victory, thus sending the Falcons to a Game 5 for the second time this week, and the seventh time this season – including two against Central.

“We played well in those first two games, hit .516 in that second game and we were really taking it to them,” Johnson said. “We got to Game 5, and we said, 'Hey, we've got to keep it in line – go back to what we started with.”

The Falcons are home against Saint Martin's on Thursday in Brougham Pavilion.
