BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Seattle Pacific Falcons finally slowed down UC San Diego on Friday night.

It just wasn't soon enough.

Suzanna Ohlsen scored a career-high 19 points, but the No. 8-ranked Tritons hit their first four shots of the game, all from behind the 3-point line, and rolled to an 86-67 victory on the first night of the West Region Crossover Classic at Western Washington University.

Sophomore guard Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) surpassed her previous career best of 14 points, set last Feb. 23 at home against Western Washington. She hit 6 of 9 from the field, including a trey, and 6 of 8 from the foul line.

Daisy Feder poured in 29 for UC San Diego (1-3), with 21 of those coming on 7-of-11 shooting from downtown.

The Tritons, who lost to a pair of nationally ranked teams and also to Simon Fraser in last weekend's Disney Tip-Off Classic, raced to a 17-4 lead, thanks to their sharp shooting from long range. They were 10 of 14 on treys during the first half on the way to a 53-33 lead at the break.

“I've coached for a long time, but to see a team hit 10 of 14 from 3 – that changes things,” SPU coach Julie Heisey said. “In the first half, we were contesting a lot of those 3s. And even with them hitting 71 percent (of their treys) – if you could exchange the 3s for 2s, then we're only down by 10. But we're down by 20, and that's just a big hole.”

Junior guard Mechela Barnes (Tacoma, Wash. / Bellarmine Prep HS) added 14 points and junior forward Katie Benson (Snohomish, Wash. / Snohomish HS) chipped in 12 for the Falcons (2-1).

SPU is back in Bellingham on Saturday to face Azusa Pacific  at 5 p.m.

The Falcons played UC San Diego essentially even in the second half, outscoring the Tritons, 34-33, and limited them to just 1 of 7 on 3-pointers. But the closest they came was within 15 points at 63-48 following a 9-0 run early in the half.

“Our goal was to get it to 10, and we got it to15,” Heisey said. “The press worked, and it changed the tempo of the game. But we hurt ourselves with unforced turnovers. We had a couple possessions where we had a travel or a charge, and all of those things kill your momentum."

Seattle Pacific out-rebounded the Tritons, 30-27, led by the six of senior guard Rachel Murray (Eglington, Australia).

San Diego shot 54.4 percent for the game (31 of 57), and 52.4 percent from downtown (11 of 21). The Falcons finished at 43.4 percent (23 of 53).

UCSD was a perfect 13 of 13 at the free throw line. Seattle Pacific hit a solid 80 percent (16 of 20).

SPU was going for its first 3-0 start since 2009. The Tritons, who went all the way to the NCAA West Region championship game last season, have won three of the past four against the Falcons.

“San Diego won 30 games last year, and even though they're a different team this year, they're still very good,” Heisey said.
