VANCOUVER, Wash. – Two men's crews posted second-place finishes Saturday for the Seattle Pacific rowing team at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference (NCRC) Invitational on Vancouver Lake.
The first-year Falcons continued an impressive start to the season with a second-place time of 7-minutes, 18.1-seconds in the men's novice four event. The only boat to beat them was NCAA Division I competitor Oregon State, which had a winning time of 7:02.5.
SPU crossed the finish line well ahead of Division II rivals Humboldt State (7:42.7) and Western Washington (8:34.5).
In an event rarely contested by the Falcons men, the first of two races for eight-oared varsities saw Oregon post a winning time of 6:41.5. SPU was second in 6:56.7 followed by Western Washington (7:03.9) and Puget Sound (7:04.3).
The top-three finishers in the men's varsity four competition crossed within seven seconds of each other. Western Washington was first with a time of 6:53.3, followed by Lewis & Clark (6:58.1), SPU (7:00.4) and Humboldt (7:11.1).
A pair of women's crews represented Seattle Pacific, including the eighth-ranked varsity eight that raced twice. The Falcons registered a time of 7:14.4 in the first of three heats and finished second to No. 2-ranked Humboldt State's winning mark of 6:58.6. Oregon was third in 7:43.0.
That heat result sent the SPU women into the petite final where they clocked a first-place time of 7:23.2. They edged second-place Willamette (7:24.5) by three seats.
Humboldt won the grand final (7:05.4) followed by Puget Sound (7:14.1), Lewis & Clark (7:19.2) and Pacific Lutheran (7:24.1).
The Falcons finished third in the women's varsity four event. Their time of 8:28.4 trailed race winner Humboldt State (7:47.6) and runner-up Puget Sound (8:20.0).
The SPU rowers travel even farther south next weekend, visiting Dexter Lake near Eugene, Ore. on April 14 for the annual Covered Bridge Regatta.
