No. 25 Tritons take down SPU

UC San Diego sweeps past Falcons in Seawolf Spike tournament

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Cailin Fellows had 12 kills, and Madi Cavell added nine on Saturday morning, but 25th-ranked UC San Diego came up with eight service aces and beat Seattle Pacific in the Seawolf Spike volleyball tournament in the Recreation Center at Sonoma State University.
 
Scores were 25-18, 25-13, 25-19.
 
The Falcons (2-6) conclude the tournament and the preseason portion of their schedule this afternoon at 3:45 against Cal State Stanislaus.
 
Senior outside hitter Fellows (Edmonds, Wash. / Edmonds-Woodway HS) logged her third double-digit kills performance in eight matches. She hit .205 for the day.
 
Sophomore middle blocker Cavell (Keizer, Ore.) hit a season-best .238. She also had a team-leading four blocks.
 
Sophomore libero Brianne Leenders (Portland, Ore.) had 17 digs. Senior setter Shelby Swanson (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS) and sophomore setter Sara Biondi (Sacramento, Calif.) each had 15 assists.
 
The 25th-ranked Tritons (4-3) were up just 18-16 on SPU in the first game, then took command with a run of three straight points. The Falcons were within 7-5 in Game 2 when UC San Diego went on a 9-1 tear to make it 16-7.
 
Seattle Pacific rallied from 10-7 to take a 13-12 lead in the third game, with two kills from Cavell part of that 6-2 spurt. But the Tritons answered with four straight points and stayed in front the rest of the way.
 
The Falcons kept UC San Diego below .200 hitting for the match (.192), but hit just .121 themselves.
