SPU-Cal State Stanislaus box score, play-by-play
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. –
Cailin Fellows and the Seattle Pacific Falcons finished their long road trip with a hard-hitting flourish.
Fellows tied her career high with 21 kills, and
Jessica Miller pounded 17 on Saturday afternoon as SPU came from behind to beat Cal State Stanislaus in four games at the Seawolf Spike volleyball tournament.
Scores in the Wolves' Den at Sonoma State University were 17-25, 25-13, 25-15, 25-23.
The Falcons (3-6) bounced back from Saturday morning's 25-18, 25-13, 25-19 loss to 25
th-ranked UC San Diego and stopped a five-match skid as they head back to begin the Great Northwest Athletic Conference portion of their schedule. The first two matches – just like all nine of their preseason contests – are on the road, at Simon Fraser on Thursday, and at rival Western Washington next Saturday. Both start at 7 p.m.
“It was important in a bunch of ways,” SPU head coach
Chris Johnson said of winding up with a win. “It's important to beat teams we feel we should beat, and be playing in system more consistently, and just in executing things the way we should be.”
Senior outside hitter Fellows (Edmonds, Wash. / Edmonds-Woodway HS) matched her previous best of 21 kills, which she set last Sept. 15 in a four-game victory at Central Washington. It was the fourth time in nine matches this season she has been in double digits, including both of Saturday's matches. (Fellows had 12 kills against UC San Diego.)
Sophomore outside hitter Miller (Fife, Wash. / Fife HS) posted her third double-digit kill match. She also had a career-high five service aces, helping the Falcons finish with a season-high 11.
“Both Cailin and Jessica are capable of playing at that level on a consistent basis,” Johnson said. “It hasn't happened yet, but they're getting closer. They're figuring out things they need to work on in order to do that.”
Senior setter
Shelby Swanson (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS) picked up another 52 assists and moved into the No. 9 spot on the GNAC's all-time list with 2,969. A career-high 60-assist performance in Friday's five-game loss to Chico State elevated her into the top 10. In addition to being just 21 assists shy of 3,000, she is 38 away from No. 8 in the GNAC.
Freshman libero Brianne Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) set a career high in digs for the second straight day, finishing with 29. She had 17 against Chico State on Friday.
The Falcons were slow out of the gate against Cal State Stanislaus (3-5). Except for a 1-1 tie, the Warriors led all the way in Game 1, and used an 8-1 run to expand an 8-6 lead to 16-7, as SPU hit -.079 while Stanislaus hit .152.
SPU fell into an early 5-2 hole in the second game before turning it around with a 10-2 surge to move permanently in front. The Falcons helped themselves by hitting .464, its second-best single-game performance of the season (exceeded only by the .500 mark in the second game at Chaminade on Aug. 31).
“We really came out flat – I think we gave them 17 of their 25 points in the first game between hitting errors and service errors and getting aced,” Johnson said. “We just said, 'Hey, don't give them points.' Then we turned it around in Game 2.”
Miller served up four of her aces – including three in a row – to help SPU go from 1-0 down to 6-1 up in the third game, and that lead continued to grow. The Falcons then had several four-point leads in Game 4, the last one at 21-17. Stanislaus staved off one match point at 24-22, but sophomore middle blocker
Madi Cavell (Keizer, Ore.) made good on the next opportunity, putting away the kill.
The Falcons hit .234 for the match, led by the .357 mark (7 kills-2 errors-14 attacks) of freshman middle blocker
Jackie Arnold (Anaheim, Calif.) Miller finished at .333, and Fellows was at a season-high .255. Cal State Stanislaus hit .177.

Fellows had 12 kills, and Cavell added nine on Saturday morning, but UC San Diego came up with eight service aces in its 25-18, 25-13, 25-19 victory.
Sophomore middle blocker Cavell also had a team-leading four blocks. Sophomore libero Brianne Leenders (Portland, Ore.) had 17 digs.
The 25
th-ranked Tritons (4-3) were up just 18-16 on SPU in the first game, then took command with a run of three straight points. The Falcons were within 7-5 in Game 2 when UC San Diego went on a 9-1 tear to make it 16-7.
Seattle Pacific rallied from 10-7 down to take a 13-12 lead in the third game, with two kills from Cavell part of that 6-2 spurt. But the Tritons answered with four straight points and stayed in front the rest of the way.
The Falcons kept UC San Diego below .200 hitting for the match (.192), but hit just .121 themselves.
