SEATTLE – They knew this one should have been theirs. That's not how it ended for the Seattle Pacific Falcons.
Katie Benson had a 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds on Saturday night for SPU, but Sasha King pumped in 23 for Alaska Anchorage, leading the Seawolves to a 77-72 Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball victory in Brougham Pavilion.
Seattle Pacific (10-4, 4-2 GNAC) went without a field goal for the last 9 minutes, 37 seconds of the game, missing its final 12 shots from the floor.
Junior forward Benson (Snohomish, Wash. / Snohomish HS) logged her second straight double-double, and broke her career rebounding high for the second game in a row. She had 13 boards, to go along with 18 points, in Thursday night's 82-71 victory against Alaska Fairbanks. She now has three double-doubles this season and seven for her career.
“It was one of those games where we had it, so that was tough,” Benson said. “Our defense was great sometimes, but at other times, we had lapses. Offensively, we had to keep playing our game, and we just didn't finish. That's the biggest thing – we have to finish.”
Junior guard
Aubree Callen (Jerome, Idaho) added 17 points for the Falcons, and sophomore guard
Suzanna Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) chipped in 13. It was Ohlsen who stole the ball – one of her career-high six for the game – and went coast to coast for a lay-in at the 9:37 mark, bring SPU within 63-62.
But from that point on, Seattle Pacific's only points – its final 10 of the game – came at the free throw line.
“Once we started the second half, we lost a little bit of rhythm,” SPU head coach
Julie Heisey said. “The first half, we had more flow – we had ball reversal, and we had some nice back doors. The second half, we tried so hard, but we didn't have the same flow.”
Alaska Anchorage (8-5, 2-3 GNAC) snapped a three-game losing streak.
Seattle Pacific is on the road for its next three games, all against the top teams in the conference. The Falcons visit No. 11 Western Washington next Thursday night in Bellingham, followed by a trip to No. 7 Simon Fraser next Saturday in Burnaby, B.C. The away stretch concludes on Jan. 26 at Montana State Billings. Western beat Simon Fraser in a battle of GNAC unbeatens on Saturday night, 59-57.
The Falcons built a 13-point lead at 28-15 with 6:21 left in the first half of Saturday's game. But the Seawolves rallied, and a three-point play by Jessica Madison lifted them into a 41-41 tie by halftime.
The teams traded momentum through the early portion of the second half, with each owning a four-point lead. Seattle Pacific went up 60-58 on a putback by Benson with 11:39 left. Alaska Anchorage went back in front for good, 61-60 on a 3-pointer by King – one of the five she made for the game – at the 11:04 mark.
SPU shot just 37.9 percent for the game (25 of 66), going just 8 of 29 (27.6 percent) during the second half. Anchorage hit 45.6 percent for the game (26 of 57), and drained 11 of 28 from behind the 3-point line. The Falcons hit just 4 of 13 from downtown.
“I'm really disappointed that we lost, and our team should be disappointed that we lost. But I look at where we've come from since last Friday, losing two starters, and our team has really stepped up and done some good things,” Heisey said. “Our defense was really good, we did a super job on the boards (SPU had a 43-36 advantage), and though we started the game with three turnovers, we finished with just 15.
“I told our kids, if we can win the boards, control offensive rebounds and control turnovers, we're going to win the game,” Heisey added. “We did a lot of things right tonight. It's just disappointing that we weren't able to finish.”
