BURNABY, B.C. – On Thursday night, Western Washington couldn't stop
Madi Cavell.
On Saturday night, Simon Fraser couldn't stop her, either.
Cavell set a career high for kills for the second straight match, this time putting down 24, and had her second consecutive double-double, and Kendall Langdon also double-doubled for the second time this week as Seattle Pacific downed Simon Fraser in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball contest.
Scores in West Gym were 25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, as Seattle Pacific (11-8, 7-4 GNAC) won their fourth in a row. The Falcons have defeated Simon Fraser (8-7, 4-6 GNAC) 13 straight times.
SPU will have its final bye of the season next Thursday, and will return to action next Saturday at Montana State Billings at 6:00 p.m. PDT.
Junior outside hitter Cavell (Keizer, Ore.) beat her previous best of 22 set in Thursday's four-game victory at No. 8 Western Washington. Her 22nd kill to tie her PR made it 20-15 in the fourth game, and she followed with her 23rd on the very next point for a 21-15 lead. She hit .222 for the night.
The double-double was Cavell's eighth of the season and the 11th of her career.
"They had no answer for Madi," SPU head coach
Chris Johnson said. "They couldn't stop her. She only got blocked once and was just overpowering everyone.
"We had the matchups we wanted all night."
Junior setter Langdon (Irvine, Calif.) now has six season and career double-doubles. Her 17 digs eclipsed her previous best of 15, set twice, including Thursday night at Western. She also had a career-high two block assists, and tied her all-time best with three service aces.
"Kendall did a real nice job of setting our middle blockers in that first game – they had nine kills between them (five for
Nikki Lowell, four for
Jackie Arnold) in Game 1," Johnson said. "When they have to respect your middles that much, it makes it hard to block your outsides."
Senior Lowell (Claremont, Calif.) slammed 13 kills for the night and hit .276. She also had three blocks, giving her 379 for her career, just two short of taking over the No. 5 spot on the team's all-time blocking list.
Sophomore Arnold (Anaheim, Calif.) had nine kills and hit a team-leading .318.
The Falcons were up 18-15 in Game 4 when they tallied five straight points, the last four of those with freshman outside hitter
Lexi Biondi (Albuquerque, N.M.) serving. Simon Fraser fought off one match point at 24-17, but then hit long on the next one to clinch it for SPU.
Kelsey Robinson had 21 kills to lead the Clan.
Seattle Pacific used a 4-0 run in the opening game to go from 17-15 down to 19-17 up, and stayed ahead the rest of the way. Simon Fraser took early control of the second game, building a 13-5 lead, before the Falcons rallied to get within 20-19. The Clan regained the momentum with four straight points.
The third game featured 14 ties and eight lead changes. It was deadlocked at 19-19 when SPU put the next four on the board. The Clan closed to 24-23, then hit one long to give the Falcons the winning point.
For the match, Seattle Pacific hit .183, and limited Simon Fraser to .145.
