Benson, Ohlsen in double figures as Falcons lead wire to wire in 65-46 victory

SEATTLE – Katie Benson scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, and Suzanna Ohlsen added 13 points on Friday night as the Seattle Pacific Falcons rolled past Montana Tech on the opening night of the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic in Brougham Pavilion, 65-46.
 
The Falcons (3-0) scored the first six points of the game and led from wire to wire. This is the team's first 3-0 start since the 2009-10 season.
 
Senior forward Benson (Snohomish, Wash. / Snohomish HS) shot 6 of 11 from the field. Of her eight boards, five were at the offensive end.
 
Junior guard Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) had two rebounds, handed out two assists, and came up with three steals to go along with her season-best 13 points. Senior guard Aubree Callen (Jerome, Idaho) led the Falcons with five assists, and also had six points and five rebounds.
 
Seattle Pacific, last year's NCAA Division II free throw shooting champion, was back in form at the line on Friday, draining 14 of 16. That included 4 of 5 for Benson. The Falcons had a season-low 10 turnovers.
 
SPU was up 15-10 with 6:59 left in the first half when it put together a string of 11 straight points to break open the game. SPU had a 30-12 lead at halftime.
 
The lead grew to as many as 25 points during the second half, and the NAIA Orediggers (3-2) never got closer than 17.
 
Sophia Baetz led Montana Tech with 16 points.
 
Seattle Pacific will take on Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday at 5:00 p.m., seeking their first 4-0 start since 2007-08. Point Loma opened the tournament on Friday with a 74-62 victory against Central Washington.
