Senior ties career high with 30 to lead SPU past Colorado Christian, 94-78

SEATTLE – Patrick Simon tied his career high with 30 points on Friday night, leading the No. 2-ranked Seattle Pacific Falcons past Colorado Christian on the opening night of the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic, 94-78.
 
Senior forward Simon (Ephrata, Wash.) previously hit for 30 last Nov. 29 at Alaska Fairbanks. On Friday, he drained 11 of 15 from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point territory, and all four of his free throws.
 
The Falcons (4-0) put forth a potent offense on their Brougham Pavilion home court, with four players in double figures. Junior center Cory Hutsen (Sammamish, Wash.) tallied 19 points, junior guard Riley Stockton (Spokane, Wash.) added 13, and junior guard Matt Borton (Yakima, Wash.) had 12.
 


Seattle Pacific got off to a quick start, taking a 10-0 lead in the first two minutes, forcing the Cougars to take an early timeout. Colorado Christian regrouped, but was outmatched by the Falcons, who shot 51.7 percent from the field (30 of 58) and went 7 for 7 at the free throw line. SPU took a 45-31 lead into halftime.
 
In the second half, the Cougars went on a seven-point run on the strength of Michael Brown's and JT Travis' shooting. They got as close as seven points at 63-56 with 10:35 left before the Falcons regained control.
 
Stockton also led the team in rebounds with seven, and Borton grabbed in six. Senior guard David Downs (Kirkland, Wash. / Bellevue Christian HS) led SPU in assists with nine, also scoring nine points.
 
Seattle Pacific was nearly perfect at the foul line, hitting 28 of 29. Colorado Christian hit 13 of 17.
 
Brown finished with 28 points for Colorado Christain (0-1), and Kyle Weaver had 21.
 
The Falcons will return to the court Saturday at 7 p.m. when they face Dixie State( 2-0). The Red Storm beat Central Washington in an earlier game on Friday, 106-89.
