BURNABY, B.C. – This time, a fifth game wasn't enough for Seattle Pacific.

Madi Cavell hammered 19 kills and Jessica Miller had a season-high 18, but the Falcons fell short of Simon Fraser in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match on Thursday night.

Scores in West Gym were 25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 24-26, 16-14.

SPU (11-9, 5-7 GNAC) had won four of its previous five matches this season that went to the five-game limit. The only one that didn't fall the Falcons' way was against the Clan (13-6, 7-4 GNAC) in Brougham Pavilion on Sept. 27.

On Thursday, Simon Fraser hung on again. Seattle Pacific fought back from a 13-9 deficit in Game 5 to tie it at 13-13, with junior libero Breanne Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif. serving on the last three of those points.

The Clan went up 14-13, but a kill by senior outside hitter Miller (Fife, Wash. / Fife HS) kept the Falcons alive. Then, back-to-back Simon Fraser kills clinched the match.

Sophomore middle blocker Maddi Hommes (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden HS) had a career-high 10 kills. Senior setter Sara Biondi (Sacramento, Calif.) recorded a double-double of 50 assists (a season high) and 12 digs. It was her seventh double-double of the season and eighth of her career. She moved past the 2,000 career mark for assists, now totaling 2,042.

Senior libero Brianna Leenders (Portland, Ore.) and freshman middle blocker Hannah Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) came up with 20 digs apiece. Lautenbach's total was a career high, her second straight match of setting a new mark. She had 12 in last Saturday's five-game victory against Alaska Fairbanks.

Miller's 18 kills pushed her past 500 for her career. She now has 501.

Simon Fraser scored the first four points of the match and led for the entirety of Game 1. The second game was all SPU, as the Falcons were up 9-4 early, then used a 10-2 run to snap a 13-13 tie and build a 23-15 lead.

The Clan led Game 3 from start to finish. Then, with Seattle Pacific up 10-5 in Game 4, Simon Fraser scored 11 of the next 13 points to go up 16-12, gradually expanding it to 22-16.

But the Falcons weren't done, putting together an 8-1 surge to take a 24-23 lead. The Clan tied it at 24, but Biondi dumped one over the net, and Simon Fraser had a hitting error to close it out for SPU and force the fifth game.

Seattle Pacific had 57 kills and hit .161 for the match. Simon Fraser put down 72 kills, led by the 19 of Kelsey Robinson, on the way to hitting .229.

The Falcons play at Western Washington on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
