SEATTLE – A reversal of fortunes on the balance beam fueled the Falcons improved performance Friday.

Maria Hundley won the uneven bars for the first time this season, and Kai Tindall tied for first place on the floor exercise, leading Seattle Pacific to a second-place finish against Sacramento State in a women's gymnastics meet at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons scored 192.45 points, their second-highest total of the season. Their only better mark in 2014 was 193.425 against Washington on Jan. 24, also in Brougham. Sacramento State finished barely ahead, tallying 192.675.

SPU narrowed an early deficit by picking up a full point during the third rotation, scoring 48.075 on the beam to 47.075 for the Hornets on the floor. Sacramento entered the final event with a slim 144.300-144.125 advantage and increased that by .05 on the final rotation with a 48.375 on the beam to 48.325 for the Falcons on the floor.

Sophomore Hundley (Littleton, Colo.) pulled down a 9.775 for her winning bars routine.

"Maria had a great bars set," said SPU coach Laurel Tindall. "She did a really nice routine, but the score was a little bit conservative."

Hundley previously had one win on the beam, one on the vault, and two ties for first on the vault.

In 20 rotations this year, Hundley has been SPU's top scorer 10 times.

"We're just sad that we can't have her in four events. Her leg injury isn't letting her do much on floor," Tindall explained. "Maria would be a strong all-arounder if we were able to go that direction, but we can't afford to lose her for the other three events."

SPU senior Tindall (Brier, Wash. / Mountlake Terrace HS) earned a 9.70 with her elegant floor performance. It was the third time this winter she either has been first (twice) or tied for first (once) on the floor.

"She's been our top floor person every single meet this season," Coach Tindall said of her daughter Kai. "She's upgraded her difficulty and she loves doing floor. I think you can see that from the stands."

The Falcons topped 48 points on all four events Friday night – the first time this season they've done that. They totaled 48.325 on the floor, 48.075 on the beam, and 48.025 on both the vault and bars.

"We had probably our most consistent meet. The best thing is we were nice and consistent with 48s on every event." Tindall said.

"Definitely our scores were a little bit lower than what we would have liked them to be. It was pretty tight scoring tonight. But it was a nice solid meet, which is what we needed to have and we didn't count a fall."

The beam total included five no-fall routines, led by freshman Lauren Glover (Fort Collins, Colo.), who helped set the tone by leading off with a 9.675. It was Seattle Pacific's first 48 on the beam this season, topping its previous high of 47.825 on Jan. 24 against Washington. That also was a big jump from last Saturday's 45.625 at Air Force.

"We exactly flip-flopped from last week when the first five kids didn't hit and the sixth one did," Tindall described. "Today the first five kids hit and the sixth one didn't. It was a total reversal, which is really interesting."

The Falcons topped 48 points on the vault for the third meet in a row. Junior Cara Lord (Collegeville, Pa.) tied her season and career high with a 9.65. Glover also scored 9.65, tying them for seventh place.

Hundley became the second SPU performer to win the bars this season, joining freshman Tracie Villanueva, whose 9.75 was best of the night in the season opener against Alaska Anchorage on Jan. 10.

Seattle Pacific is back on the road next Saturday, visiting Oregon State for a four-way meet that also includes Utah State and Boise State.

"We're hoping when we go to Oregon State next week that we will get those big scores that they like to give those Division I schools," said Tindall. "We'll be with three Division I schools."

The Falcons final home meet will be Friday, Feb. 21, against UC Davis.
