PORTLAND, Ore. – They were left out of the track and field meet in which they wanted to compete. So Maddi Hommes, RJ Straker, and Sarah Macdonald made the most of the meet in which they got to compete.

Hommes set three personal bests, Straker had two, and Macdonald won the 1,500 meters on Saturday, leading the way for Seattle Pacific at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open at Griswold Stadium.

Falcons freshman Hommes (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden HS), established new college bests in the high jump (4-11 ½), 100-meter hurdles (17.21), and long jump (15-8 ¾), placing third, fifth, and seventh, respectively. Hommes, a third-place finisher in the pentathlon at last month's Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor meet, beat her old marks of 4-9, 18.00, and 14-0½.

SPU junior Straker (Pasadena, Calif.) continued to whack off time in the 400-meter dash. Straker clocked 51.31 on Saturday, easily beating his previous PR of 52.07 set just two weeks ago at the Oregon State Invitational. Coming into the season, Straker's best was 53.34.

He also broke 23 seconds in the 200 for the first time, checking in eighth at 22.86, nearly a full second better than his old best of 23.70 set in 2012.

Macdonald took a significant drop in the 1,500. The freshman from Tucson, Ariz., won in 4:46.00, way better than the 4:53.20 she ran at Oregon State on March 8. On Saturday, she was nearly three seconds ahead of runner-up Hannah Greider from Linfield.

All three, along with several other Falcons, originally were entered in Saturday's Oregon Preview in Eugene. But total entries in that even were much more limited than in previous years. So when they ultimately were not on the final list for that meet, they made plans for Portland instead.

Junior David Ferguson (51.07 for fifth in the 400), sophomore Adam Avischious (4:03.41 for fourth in the 1,500), junior Turner Wiley (4:06.99 for eighth in the 1,500) also had PRs in the men's meet. Ferguson also was third in the 200 (22.40) for Seattle Pacific's highest placement of the day.

Sophomore Lindsay LeBrun (1:02.70 for 10th in the 400) and Hannah Calvert (5:04.34 for 12th in the 1,500) logged PR's on the women's side.

The Falcons are back in action next Saturday in the Club Northwest Spring Break Open at West Seattle Stadium. The first event is at 9:00 a.m.
