Madi Cavell put down 14 kills, and
Ellie Britt added 10 – the last of which snapped a 22-22 tie in the final game – as Seattle Pacific hung on to beat Chaminade in the Pacific West-Great Northwest Athletic Conference Crossover volleyball tournament on Friday afternoon.
Game scores in Dominican University's Conlan Center were 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22.
The Falcons (5-1) return to the court later today for a match against host Dominican. First serve is at 6:30 p.m.
SPU has won three straight matches, including two in this tournament.
The fourth game was a series of momentum swings – and the last of those went Seattle Pacific's way. The Falcons were down15-13 after the much-improved Silverswords (5-2) put four straight points on the board to move ahead.
But SPU then responded with five in a row for an 18-15 lead. It was still a four-point advantage at 22-18 when Chaminade scored four straight on two kills, a service ace, and a Falcons attack error to tie it at 22.
A kill by junior outside hitter Britt (Orange, Calif.) gave Seattle Pacific sideout and a 23-22 lead. Junior libero
Breanne Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) took over the serve, and Chaminade had back-to-back attack errors for the final two points of the match.
Senior setter
Sara Biondi (Sacramento, Calif.), coming off her triple-double in Thursday night's five-game victory against Academy of Art, set up another 34 assists. She also had a career-high four service aces, doubling her previous best of two, which she reached three times. Senior libero
Brianna Leenders (Gresham, Ore.) had 22 digs.
Although the Falcons struggled with their hitting against Chaminade (just .127), they came up big defensively. They had 14 blocks, led by the career-high eight block assists of freshman
Hannah Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.). Senior opposite
Jessica Miller (Fife, Wash. / Fife HS) had six block assists.
SPU also clamped down on Chaminade's hitting. After the Silverswords hit a sizzling .419 in winning Game 1 (15 kills-2 errors-31 attacks), they went down to .118 in Game 2, then.031 in Game 3, and finally minus-.171 in Game 4, giving them a final percentage of .091 (40-28-132).
No one had double-digit kills for Chaminade, as Cassie Rushlow and Suncica Bakic had nine apiece.
