Box Score Box score, play-by-play SEATTLE – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos leaped for 11 blocks on Friday afternoon, and built big leads in the second, third, and fourth games to beat Seattle Pacific in the SPU Volleyball Tournament, 3-1.
Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 19-25, 25-13, 27-25, 25-20.
The Falcons (1-1) will be back on the court later today, taking on undefeated Cal State Los Angeles (2-0) at 8:00 p.m.
Senior outside hitter
Madi Cavell (Keizer, Ore.) led Seattle Pacific with 16 kills and also had nine digs. She moved past 600 kills for her career, now at 614. Junior outside hitter
Ellie Britt (Orange, Calif.) added nine kills and 10 digs. Senior setter
Sara Biondi had a double-double of 34 assists and 11 digs.
Seattle Pacific led for most of the first game, building a 20-11 advantage before the Broncos got in sync and came as close as four points, the last time at 23-19, before the Falcons finished it.
Pomona scored the first three points of Game 2 and never trailed. Up 7-5, the Broncos ran off 10 straight to put it out of reach.
SPU had several leads in the third game, including 23-21. Cal Poly Pomona ran off three straight to go up 24-23, but the Falcons fought off that try at set point plus one more, but was unable to regain the lead.
A 5-0 run early in the fourth game snapped a 2-2 tie and put the Broncos ahead for good. The lead grew to as many as 10 at 19-9. Seattle Pacific got as close as three at 21-18.
The Falcons hit just .105, despite a strong start at .433 in Game 1. Pomona finished at .240, including .367 in the first game and .462 in the second.
Lauren Jones slammed 17 kills for the Broncos and hit .538.
