Jessica Miller had 13 kills and hit .462, and the Falcons finished the match on a 10-0 scoring run to beat Cal State Los Angeles in the Seattle Tournament on Friday night.
Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 25-17, 25-19, 25-19.
That gave the Falcons a split of their two Friday matches. Earlier, they dropped a four-gamer to Cal Poly Pomona, 19-25, 25-13, 27-25, 25-20.
"The way we came out tonight, we were just fired up start to finish, intense, aggressive – everything we want to be," SPU head coach
Chris Johnson said. "We just got a point – that timeout when it was 16-10 (for the Golden Eagles) when they finally understood where we could still attack them and what was working and how to stay aggressive. And we just executed.
"You can't ask for a whole lot more than that as a coach. That was just fantastic."
The Falcons (2-1) wrap up the three-day tournament on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against Dixie State. The Red Storm split their two matches on Friday, getting swept by Cal State L.A., then sweeping Chico State. Saturday's other two contests pit Dixie against Cal Poly Pomona at 11 a.m., and Western Oregon against Chico at 1:30 p.m.
Seattle Pacific fell into a 7-2 hole in the third game against L.A. Facing that 16-10 deficit coming out of the timeout, the Falcons cut it in half before the Golden Eagles restored a four-point edge.
It was 19-15 when CSULA went wide on an attack. That turned the serve over to senior libero
Brianna Leenders (Gresham, Ore.). Two Eagles errors brought cut the margin to 19-18, then Leenders delivered back-to-back service aces for a 20-19 lead – SPU's first of the game.
Miller hammered two consecutive kills, one of them on a nice angle to the back corner, and junior outside hitter
Ellie Britt (Orange, Calif.) slammed one that was blocked wide to make it 23-19.
A kill by Miller that L.A. blocked into the net set up match point. That went onto the Falcons' side of the board on the next ball when an Eagles attack flew wide.
"I think the key to that success was we just wanted to finish and finish strong," Miller said. "We had complete confidence in each other on the court, and when you play like that, it's just fun. All the energy at the end – sure, keep going, let's keep going."
The Falcons, who led all the way in the first game, also finished Game 2 with a big surge, outscoring CSULA by a 9-2 margin.
Senior setter
Sara Biondi (Sacramento, Calif.) also hit .462 with seven kills, and freshman middle blocker
Hannah Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.), had six kills and hit .385.
Senior outside hitter
Madi Cavell had nine kills. She put down 16 in the Pomona match, pushing her past 600 for her career. She now has 623.
Seattle Pacific finished with a .282 hitting percentage, it's best in three matches after going .260 in Thursday night's sweep of Chico State and just .105 in the loss to Pomona.
