• VIDEO: Alexa Okamura SEATTLE –
Alexa Okamura set career-high scores on the balance beam and floor exercise, and
Amanda Willingham shattered her best on the floor, but Alaska Anchorage topped 48 points on three of the four events to beat Seattle Pacific in a women's gymnastics dual meet on Friday night.
The Seawolves finished with 191.825 points, besting SPU's total of 189.550. That marked their first victory in 26 all-time visits to Brougham Pavilion in Seattle.
The Falcons lost for just the second-time in the series. They own a 39-2 all-time advantage over UAA.
Okamura (Redmond, Wash./Redmond HS) earned a 9.775 on the beam, tying for the team's second-best score of the season on that apparatus. That was just ahead of her previous high of 9.700, and was good for second place on Friday.
The SPU junior's floor score of 9.55 bettered her old high of 9.500, set just last Saturday at Air Force.
Willingham (Capitan, N.M.), a senior, scored a 9.55 on the floor, beating the 9.05 that she scored on Jan. 17 at Central Michigan. Willingham had a 9.775 last week in a meet at Air Force, but was competing exhibition that night in a practice performance that earned her a lineup spot Friday.
Senior
Sydney Clark (Eugene, Ore.) registered the loftiest floor score by a Falcon this year. She tied her career high with a second-place mark of 9.800. Clark finished fourth in the all-around, totaling 37.900 points.
Senior
Cara Lord (Collegeville, Pa.) tied her career high on the uneven bars with 9.700. She tallied a season-best score of 9.55 on the vault.
Tracie Villanueva (Kaneohe, Hawaii) tied for second-place honors on the bars with a 9.775. The sophomore standout was the team's top bars scorer in each of the last three meets.
M'rcy Matsunami won the bars (9.750) and all-around (38.900) and tied for the vault title (9.775) with Seawolves teammate Morgan Cook. UAA swept all four event titles as Emily Ramberg topped the beam field (9.825) and Simone Penker won the floor competition (9.825).
Anchorage totaled 48.575 points on the beam, 48.275 on the vault, and 48.000 on the bars. Seattle Pacific had a pair in that scoring neighborhood, with 48.300 on the floor and 48.150 on the bars.
The Falcons will get another shot at Alaska Anchorage on March 21 when the Seawolves host the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.
SPU is on the road next week, visiting Utah State in Logan on Friday, Feb. 6, at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time. The Falcons next home meet is Feb. 27 against Air Force.
