Box Score Box score, play-by-play (HTML)SEATTLE – It happens a lot, no matter what sport: Sometimes, an athlete thinks too much instead of just going out and playing.
On Tuesday night,
Luisa McInnis just went out and played.
McInnis put down 10 kills and hit a solid .643, and
Shaun Crespi had eight blocks as the Seattle Pacific Falcons snapped a six-match volleyball losing streak by sweeping Saint Martin's.
Scores of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest in Brougham Pavilion were 25-22, 25-15, 25-11.
The 10 kills for senior middle blocker McInnis (Santa Rosa, Calif) marked the first time in her two years at SPU that she has recorded double-digits. Her previous Falcon high was seven, set on Oct. 22 at Western Oregon. Her overall career high is 14, recorded during her sophomore year at Santa Rosa Junior College.
McInnis' hitting percentage (10 kills-1 error-14 attacks) also was her best in a Seattle Pacific uniform, beating the .556 (6-1-9) that she hit against Central Washington on Oct. 15. Her overall best is .778 from Santa Rosa. McInnis also had four total blocks on Tuesday.
"The fact that it was a Tuesday (match) and it's earlier in the week and things are kind of hectic, I wasn't really thinking much about it today," McInnis said. "Coming in here, I just felt really stress-free and felt really loose and comfortable. Our setting was amazing, and the passing was great for me to be able to be set that often. Everyone played a great game tonight."
Added Falcons coach
Chris Johnson, "Everything she was hitting was going down. A couple of those were really big-time swings, and a couple were her doing a good job with not a great set, and she wound up finding the floor anyway."
Freshman middle blocker Crespi (Camarillo, Calif.) had a career-high three solo blocks among her eight total for the Falcons (7-16, 5-10 GNAC), who play at Montana State Billings on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. Pacific time.
Lexi BiondiSophomore outside hitter
Lexi Biondi (Albuquerque, N.M.) had seven kills and hit .222; sophomore opposite
Hannah Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) put down five kills and hit an error-free .294, and senior outside hitter
Ellie Britt added six kills with just two errors on 23 attacks.
"Hannah had a great match, Lexi finished well and she did a good job minimizing her errors, and Ellie minimized her errors, as well," Johnson said. "I was really happy with the offense tonight."
Senior libero
Breanne Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) led SPU with 14 digs, and freshman setter
Symone Tran (Portland, Ore.) had 17assists.
The Saints (2-20, 1-14 GNAC) kept the first game close, in part by rallying from 17-12 to climb into an 18-18 tie. It was also tied at 21-21 before back-to-back kills by McInnis and a combined block by McInnis and Britt put the Falcons in control at 24-21.
SPU used a 6-1 surge to take charge of Game 2, turning a 4-4 tie into a 10-5 lead. The third game was tied just once, that at 1-1, before the Falcons went ahead to stay. A string of nine straight points from 10-5, with Tran serving on the last eight of those, effectively put it away.
"It wasn't just the win, but the way we won," Johnson said. "It's with the new lineup (a 6-2 formation), and it looks like we're jelling pretty well with it. This is what it looks like when we play well, and this is what it feels like."
Seattle Pacific's defense kept Saint Martins to minus-.073 hitting (21-28-96). That's the first time this fall Falcons have kept an opponent below sea level. SPU hit .186 (33-15-97).
