Sydney Clark achieved season-high scores in three events and the all-around Saturday and sophomore
Tracie Villanueva placed fourth on the uneven bars for Seattle Pacific, which finished third in a women's gymnastics meet at Edmundson Pavilion won by California.
The NCAA Division II Falcons compiled 192.050 points, their third-highest team score of the year. Cal amassed a season-high score of 196.600 to win handily over host Washington, which was second with 195.325. They are both Division I competitors.
The Golden Bears featured freshman Toni-Ann Williams who won the all-around (39.375) and floor exercise (9.95). Cal's Charlie Owens was second in the all-around (39.225) while teammates Amber Takara (9.875) won the bars and Desiree Palomares tied UW's Jackie McCartin for top balance beam honors (9.90).
Washington's Hailey Burleson was the vault winner (9.925) and Allison Northey was third in the all-around (38.850).
Clark (Eugene, Ore.) compiled 38.650 points over the quartet of events to finish fourth and come within .125 of her career-best of 38.775. She received a career-high score of 9.825 on the floor along with season-best efforts on the vault (9.625) and beam (9.750). Clark scored 9.45 on the bars.
"Sydney obviously had some really good routines and scored a season-high all-around," said SPU coach
Laurel Tindall. "She was great tonight, especially on vault, beam and floor."
SPU junior
Maria Hundley (Littleton, Colo.) matched Clark's beam mark of 9.75 and they tied for seventh place on that apparatus.
Friday was only the second meet of the season for Hundley, who was sidelined with an injury until last week. She won three events at the 2014 USAG Collegiate Championships, capturing national titles on the vault, bars and beam.
Villanueva (Kaneohe, Hi.) rebounded from two weeks of subpar bars routines to finish fourth in that event among a high-powered field. Her score of 9.80 was 0.05 off the finest mark of her career.
Ariana HargerFreshman
Ariana Harger (Castro Valley, Calif.) registered SPU's highest score of the season on any event with a fifth-place 9.85 floor tally.
In total, the Falcons established 11 new season-high marks.
SPU started on the beam and had some mishaps the resulted in the only event score below 48, a 47.40.
"We counted three falls tonight, two on beam," Tindall said. "It really hurt to have Nos. 5 and 6 fall on beam because those are the ones we were counting on for big scores. That was our first event and we really rebounded well from that."
In the second rotation, the Falcons forged a score of 48.00 on the floor fueled by three career-high marks. Freshman
Ariana Harger placed fifth with a 9.850, Clark was ninth at 9.825 and senior
Amanda Willingham was 15th at 9.675. Sophomore
Kristi Hayashida came within a tenth of her best with a 14th-place tally of 9.70.
SPU kept getting better, coming within one-tenth of its season-high vault score with a 48.20.
Despite the lofty team total, Tindall thought the scores should have been even better.
"There were a few scores that could have been a little higher on vault where we didn't break a 9.7. All year we've had vault above 9.7."
Sophomore
Paige Blaney (Edmonton, Alberta) was SPU's top performer on the vault, finishing 12th at 9.675.
The Falcons finished the meet on the bars and smashed their season-best mark in that event with a 48.450. The previous high was 48.150.
Tracie VillanuevaAlong with Villanueva's fourth-place mark, SPU got career bests from senior
Cara Lord (9.75) and sophomore
Renee Zografos (9.725) and a season-high from sophomore
Breanna Beltran (9.70), who earlier received a 9.625 on vault.
"Bre had a big improvement in both vault and bars because this is best she's hit both events," said Tindall. "She hasn't performed bars like this all season. She finally put everything together and hit bars and had a really good vault that should have been scored higher."
The Falcons host their final home meet of the season on Friday with a 7 p.m. dual against Air Force at Brougham Pavilion.
