SEATTLE – Devon May had a double-double of 18 kills and 23 digs, and Simon Fraser hung on to get past Hawaii Pacific in a marathon five-game match at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference-Pacific West Crossover Volleyball Tournament on Thursday night.
Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 39-37, 25-16, 21-25, 32-34, 15-11. From first serve to last point was 2 hours, 45 minutes.
Tessa May hammered 16 kills for the Clan (3-2), Christine Howlett had 14, and Madison Power had 10. Both Simon Fraser setters also had double-doubles: 27 assists and 13 digs for Danielle Curtis; 26 assists and 15 digs for Tamara Nipp.
Pomai Reccal put down 26 kills and hit .270 for Hawaii Pacific (2-3), taking 63 swings at the ball. Elizabeth Culpepper had a monster double-double of 20 kills and 22 digs, and Kasey Thompson recorded 16 kills.
Tenika Wentworth posted a double-double of 55 assists and 21 digs.
The Sharks had a 24-19 lead in Game 1 before Simon Fraser scored five straight to tie it. It subsequent was tied each step up the ladder all the way to 37-37. HPU had 11 tries at set point, but was not able to convert.
A kill by Tessa May gave the Clan their seventh try to secure the set, and a subsequent attack error by the Sharks gave it to Simon Fraser.
Leading two games to one, the Clan built a 24-20 lead in Game 4. But Hawaii Pacific fought back to tie it at 24-24. From there, it was up to 32-32. A pair of Simon Fraser errors put the final two points on the board for the Sharks and forced the deciding Game 5.
Simon Fraser scored three straight points to go from 4-3 down to 6-3 up and led the rest of the way.
