Box Score SPU-Academy of Art box score, play-by-play
SPU-Cal Baptsit box score, play-by-playSEATTLE – A much-needed victory in their first match, and some intense, quality play in their second one against a team that is starting to get some national notice.
Those were the kinds of volleyball performances the Seattle Pacific Falcons were looking for on Friday.
Hannah Lautenbach recorded her first double-double of the season, and
Shaun Crespi hit a career-high .350 as SPU came back from losing the first game to beat Academy of Art in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference-Pacific West Crossover Volleyball Tournament, 3-1.
Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 20-25, 25-9, 25-22, 25-23.
On Friday evening,
Ellie Britt slammed nine kills, Lautenbach put down eight more, and the Falcons gave California Baptist its toughest match of the tournament before the Lancers finally prevailed, 25-23, 25-21, 25-15.
"It's coming together and it's looking good. I was proud of the way we played tonight," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "They're taking our feedback, and they're applying it. We were just talking about it as coaches, and we've basically been playing together just two months. We've got four freshmen and a sophomore out there. I'm excited about our potential."
The three-day tournament concludes on Saturday with five matches. Seattle Pacific plays in the last one, taking on Hawaii Pacific at 7:30 p.m.
SPU 3, Academy of Art 1Sophomore hitter / blocker Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) had 11 kills and 15 digs for her second career double-double. In addition, Lautenbach had six block assists.
Freshman middle blocker Crespi (Camarillo, Calif.) had nine kills and just two errors on 20 attacks. Her previous best hitting percentage was .333 (6-2-12) last weekend against Lewis University at the Cal State Los Angeles Invitational. Crespi also had five total blocks, including two solos, on Friday. Both of those totals were career-bests.
Freshman setter
Symone Tran put three career highs into the book with 37 assists, eight digs, and three block assists. Tran (Portland, Ore.) had 31 assists in last Friday's victory against Molloy College in L.A.
Breanne
WiekampBreanne Wiekamp continued the strong start to her senior season, coming up with another 15 digs and sending two service aces across the net. Sophomore defensive specialist
Sophie Kuehl (Vancouver, Wash. / Columbia River HS) added 10 digs and a career-best three service aces.
Up two games to one, Seattle Pacific found itself down 18-13 in Game 4, thanks to five straight Urban Knights points. But the Falcons rallied with five straight of their own, with Wiekamp serving for the last four of those, tying it at 18-18. Art went back on top 21-19, then SPU ran off thee more for a 22-21 advantage.
At 23-23, Tran dove to dig up a ball and get it over the net, and the Knights were unable to return it. SPU then made good on its first try at match point, watching an Art attack land just beyond the end line.
"It felt good to see us fight through some adversity, especially the way we turned it around so fast," Johnson said. "Being down five points in that last game, then coming back and finishing it in four was really good."
SPU had a 13-8 lead in Game 1, thanks to a six-point run that was sparked by the serving of freshman
Amanda Ganete (Hillsboro, Ore.) Ganete served up three straight aces – the most of her brief career – as part of a string of six straight points.
The Falcons were still up 15-11 when Academy of Art (4-3) ran off seven straight points to go up 18-15 and never trailed again.
The second game was all Seattle Pacific. The Falcons also led for the entirety of Game 3 except for ties at 15 and 16.
Cal Baptist 3, SPU 0The Lancers' first two opponents in the tournament (Alaska Fairbanks and Simon Fraser) managed to top 20 points in one game each. The Falcons did that in Friday's first two games, building a two-point edge on three occasions in Game 2.
"Tonight was our best passing performance, maybe ever," Johnson said. "Our passing numbers were phenomenal. And their top outside hitter (sophomore Lauren Hackett) hit zero on 30 swings. (In Friday's earlier match against Simon Fraser, Hackett had 18 kills on 30 swings and hit .567). When we can shut down a hitter like that, that's impressive."
Cal Baptist, though not yet in the top 25 but now receiving votes in the national poll, went up 20-15 in Game 1. The Falcons rallied all the way back within one at 22-21 and again at 24-23 before a Lauren Marr kill finished it.
The lead changed hands four times in the second game, and it was tied six times, the last at 15-15 before the Lancers edged ahead to stay.
CBU took charge of Game 3 with an 8-0 surge that expanded a 15-12 lead to 23-12.
