SEATTLE – Mattie Shelford put down 20 kills and hit a nearly-flawless .550 on Friday morning as Azusa Pacific swept past Montana State Billings to start the second day of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference-Pacific West Crossover Volleyball Tournament.
Scores in Seattle Pacific's Brougham Pavilion were 25-17, 25-15, 25-15.
Shelford, a senior opposite had just one error on 20 attacks. She also had two block assists. Ally Gonzalez added nine kills and had two solo blocks.
Ashley Swatek came up with 17 digs for Azusa Pacific (2-4). Jaden Louie collected 15 assists, and Jewels Tavera had 13.
Taylor Sherman topped MSU Billings with six kills. Kimmy Kirk nad 17 digs, and Kyndal Williams recorded 17 assists for the Yellowjackets (1-5).
APU has won two straight matches in this tournament after going 0-4 last week in Anchorage, but with three of those losses coming against nationally ranked teams. The Cougars will play their final two tourney matches on Satudray, facing Alaska Fairbanks at 9:30 a.m. PDT and Simon Fraser at 5:00 p.m.
Billings has lost both of its tournament matches. The Yellowjackets face Hawaii Pacific at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, and wind up against California Baptist on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
