Box Score Box score, play-by-play GNAC-Pac West Tournament Central SEATTLE – It's still a volleyball work in progress for the Seattle Pacific Falcons.
Freshman setter
Symone Tran logged her second career double-double, and fellow freshman
Dani Johnson led the way with eight kills on Saturday night, but SPU fell short against Hawaii Pacific in the final match of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference-Pacific West Crossover Volleyball Tournament .
Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 25-20, 25-13, 25-21.
"We have to solidify our block and we've got to get some kills," said Falcons coach
Chris Johnson, whose team had 19 fewer kills than Hawaii Pacific (51-32)."We've just gotta do things right. It's not for a lack of athleticism. We just have to learn how to do stuff better."
Tran (Portland, Ore.) had 25 assists and tied her career high with 11 digs. She also logged a career-best five kills.
Johnson (Bellingham, Wash. / Sehome HS) had one of SPU's three service aces to go along with her eight digs.
Senior libero
Breanne Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) came up with a season-high 22 digs. Sophomore
Hannah Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) had 14 digs and a solo block.
The Falcons fell into a quick 7-2 hole in Game 1, and Hawaii Pacific never let them get closer than three. The last time was 13-10. The Sharks responded with four straight points.
HPU finished the second game on a 16-4 roll, snapping a 9-9 tie and taking complete command. It then scored the first five points of Game 3.
But Seattle Pacific found some spark, cutting the deficit all the way down to one point on five occasions. It was 20-19 when Hawaii Pacific put three straight on the board.
"When they come to life, it looks really good," Johnson said. "We're just trying to get that out of them on a consistent basis, and do the things we're doing well on a consistent basis."
Johnson is still trying different combinations with a young team that occasionally had four freshmen and a sophomore on the court at the same time.
"We came into the weekend with a different lineup than we had played yet this year. It was good to see that they were able to adapt to those things and still play at a very high level," he said.
The Sharks got 17 kills from Elizabeth Culpepper. She made it a double-double with 13 digs.
Seattle Pacific begins GNAC play on the road next week, visiting Simon Fraser on Thursday and Western Washington on Saturday, both at 7:00 p.m. The match against the Vikings will be at Whatcom Community College in Bellingham, as WWU's gymnasium is undergoing renovation.
