SEATTLE – Mattie Shelford slammed 15 kills, Ashley Midland put down 12, and Azusa Pacific, after letting a five-point lead slip away in Game 3, came back to beat Alaska Fairbanks in four games on Saturday morning at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference-Pacific West Crossover Volleyball Tournament.
Scores in Seattle Pacific's Brougham Pavilion were 25-15, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16.
The Cougars (3-4) have won all three of their matches, and finish up at 5 p.m. Saturday against Simon Fraser.
Fairbanks (0-7) lost all four of its tournament matches.
Senior opposite Shelford hit .458 (15 kills-4 errors-24 attacks). Junior middle blocker Midland was even better, with just one error on 17 attacks for a .647 percentage, and had five block assists.
Ashley Swatek had 12 digs, and Katy Crouse came up with 10. Jewels Tavara put 31 assists into the book.
Azusa Pacific his a solid .336 for the match (52-14-113). Alaska Fairbank hit .159 (42-22-126).
Amberly Jeane led the Nanooks with 14 kills, and Sam Harthun added 12. Miranda Grieser had a double-double of 26 assists and 11 digs.
After winning the first two games, Azusa Pacific built a 15-10 lead in Game 3. But Alaska Fairbanks ran off six straight points as part of a 10-1 run to go up 20-16. The Cougars rallied to tie it at 20 and again at 21 before the Nanooks scored four of the final five points.
Except for a 1-1 tie, Azusa led for the entirety of the final game.
