Lexi Biondi put down 10 on Thursday night as the Falcons swept past fast-starting Concordia of Oregon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match.
Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 25-21, 26-24, 25-19.
It was the 900
th match in the 30-year history of the SPU program, and was the 200
th victory at home.
Seattle Pacific (3-8, 1-2 GNAC) also got another double-double from freshman setter
Symone Tran (Portland,Ore.). Tran had 32 assists and 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
The three-game sweep was a reversal of last week's conference-opening match at Simon Fraser. SPU won the first two games before the Clan came back to take the final three.
"We didn't want to have that same feeling," senior libero
Breanne Wiekamp said. "We really wanted to get that sweep and push ahead. This was a different game and we had different mentality in it, and we got that win."
Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) led SPU with 18 digs. Freshman middle blocker
Shaun Crespi, who out hurt for last week's matches at Simon Fraser and Western Washington, was back in her starting role. Crespi (Camarillo, Calif.) had seven kills, hit a team-leading .312, and got a hand on five total blocks, including two solos.
"It was good to have Shaun back tonight and be able to put Hannah back on the right side," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "I was really impressed with Hannah tonight. Shaun had a great night – seven kills, five blocks, hit .312, for a freshman middle coming off (an injury)
– I don't know what more you could ask for. Bre having 18 digs in three sets Is just fantastic."
The Falcons will host Western Oregon on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. During the 10-minute break between Games 2 and 3, the 30-year history of the volleyball program will be recognized, with several past players in attendance, including some members of the inaugural 1986 squad.
Concordia (9-2, 1-2 GNAC) is in its first year at the NCAA Division II level, moving up from NAIA. The Cavaliers won their first nine matches of the year, including a victory on the home court of then-No. 7 Grand Valley State in a preseason tournament.
Chris Johnson"They came in at 9-1 and they looked good on video. So we knew we were going to get a challenge," Johnson said.
The Falcons surrendered the first four points of the match, were down 9-5 and hitting minus-.100 when they called timeout. SPU steadily climbed back in, tying it at 13-13, then going from 15-14 down to 18-15 up, and never trailed again.
The Cavaliers were on the verge of tying it at a game apiece, building a 23-20 lead in Game 2. But SPU ran off four straight points: a kill by sophomore outside hitter Biondi, a dunk over the net by senior middle blocker
Jessica Boyle, a combined block by Boyle and Lautenbach, then a service ace by Tran.
Concordia fought off that game point for a 24-24 tie before another kill by Biondi (Albuquerque, N.M.) and one by Lautenbach (Portland, Ore.) secured the game for SPU.
Down 14-13 in Game 3, the Falcons rang up five straight points, including back-to-back aces by Wiekamp, to go up 18-14. That lead grew to 23-17. Concordia got within 23-19, then a kill by senior outside hitter
Ellie Britt (Orange, Calif.) and a Cavaliers attack error clinched the match.
"We were down a few in Game 1, and down by three late in Game 2, and we saw some good points and resolve from the team tonight that we hadn't shown in those situations earlier in the year," Johnson said.
Seattle Pacific hit just .126 (37 kills-22 errors-119 attacks), but kept Concordia even lower at .070 (31-23-115). The Cavaliers came in hitting .227, the fourth-highest mark in the GNAC. The Falcons clamped down on hitter Lindsey Dorsey, limiting her to four kills and .105 hitting. She had been averaging nine kills per match and was hitting .288.
