LACEY, Wash. – The momentum went missing – and just at the wrong time for the Seattle Pacific Falcons.

Breanne Lasconia scored a career-high 17 points, but Saint Martin's went on an 8-0 scoring run in the fourth quarter to beat SPU in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night, 78-70.

The high-energy contest in Marcus Pavilion was tied 14 times, and the lead changed hands 13 times. The last of those ties was at 67-67 on a 10-footer from the left of the basket by Falcons sophomore Courtney Hollander with 6:15 left.

But the Falcons then went 5 minutes, 6 seconds without a point as Saint Martin's built a 75-67 lead.

"We battled. But down the stretch when we needed points, we just weren't able to finish," said Julie Heisey, who coached her 300th Falcons game on Tuesday. "I kept challenging our kids that we had to find a way to get momentum, get three stops in a row, get three good shots and get a second shot.

"We battled so hard to get to 67-67, then we hit a drought."

SPU (6-6, 3-2 GNAC) finally got back on the board with 1:09 to go on a lay-in by junior guard Stacey Lukasiewicz to make it 75-69. The Saints (5-7, 3-2 GNAC) then made four straight trips to the free throw line to score their final three points. The Falcons tallied just one more point the rest of the way.

Seattle Pacific is off until Saturday when it visits Montana State Billings, tipping off at 6:00 p.m. Pacific time. Heisey said that after three games in the past six days, they'll be able to put that time to good use.

""Part of it is that for us to get better, we have to watch some film," she said. "With this schedule, we haven't been able to. So (on Wednesday), I'm glad we can have a day to catch our breath and just learn."

Sophomore forward Hollander (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden Christian HS) added 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists for Seattle Pacific. Sophomore guard Jordan McPhee had 11 points and a career-high seven steals (more than doubling her previous high of three) to go along with a team-leading six rebounds – all of those boards coming at the offensive end.

Junior guard Lasconia (Seattle / Shorecrest HS) beat her previous career high of 16, which she set on Nov. 13 in an 82-58 season-opening victory at Humboldt State.

Lasconia got 12 of her points on a second-quarter shooting streak during which she buried four straight from behind the 3-point arc. The last of those gave Seattle Pacific a 30-27 lead, which would wind up being its largest advantage of the night.

But the Saints – and senior guard Krista Stabler in particular – kept answering. Stabler, the GNAC's leading scorer with her 18.0 average coming into the game, poured in 12 second-quarter points on the way to 32. It was her second time this season in the 30s, having popped for 38 in a 75-71 victory against Western Oregon on Dec. 5.

Up 34-32 midway through the second, the Falcons had a stretch of five straight turnovers. But Saint Martin's managed to convert just one of those into points, and the score was tied 41-41 at the half, thanks to a 3-pointer by Stabler with three seconds remaining.

The score was tied three times in the third quarter, with four lead changes, and the Falcons were down 61-56 heading into the fourth.

"We really did a lot of good things. But Saint Martin's is a competitor," Heisey said. "They had a chance to win, and when they needed to hit shots, they hit shots."

Stabler wound up draining 12 of 22 shots, including 4 of 8 from downtown. She and fellow senior Megan Wiedeman (a career high 24) combined for 56 of the Saints' 78 points on combined 20-of-35 (.571) shooting.
