SPU Gymnasts Win 2016 Season Opener

Falcons win three of four events and the all-around en route to 188.750 team output

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Ariana Harger won the all-around title and tied for top honors on the floor exercise Saturday, helping Seattle Pacific start the 2016 women's gymnastics season with a tri-meet victory over host Air Force and Illinois State.
 
The Falcons moved into the lead during the third rotation at Cadet West Gym with the highest team vault output of 48.225. They held on in the fourth event with a bars mark of 47.125.
 
NCAA Division II Seattle Pacific's first-place team total was 188.750. Both opponents were Division I competitors. Illinois State had a second-place score of 188.275 and Air Force was third at 186.950.
 
Harger (Castro Valley, Calif.) compiled an all-around score of 38.500 in her inaugural try at the four-event competition. An All-American on the floor in 2015, Harger posted a 9.75 on Saturday to tie for first place with Kara Witgen of Air Force.
 
The SPU sophomore earned a fifth-place score of 9.70 on the vault and was third on the balance beam at 9.625. Harger received a 9.425 for her first collegiate uneven bars set, placing eighth.

SPU also got winning routines from Maria Hundley, with a 9.80 on the vault, and Kristi Hayashida, whose 9.70 beam mark tied for first with ISU's Amanda Mohler. Hundley finished in a second-place tie on the bars with a score of 9.65.
 
A senior and five-time national champion, Hundley (Littleton, Colo.) won the bars and beam gold medals at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships last April and Hayashida (Mililani, Hawaii) the beam bronze medalist.
 
A pair of freshmen made their SPU debuts. Itzia San Roman (Burnaby, B.C.) posted a 9.475 on the vault and 9.45 on the floor. Maryanna Peterson (Kent Mountain View HS) received scores of 9.55 on vault and 8.475 on floor.
 
The SPU gymnasts have another road meet next weekend when they travel to Davis, Calif. for a tri meet on Friday at 7 p.m. They will be joined by Boise State and host, UC Davis.
