SEATTLE – When the game was on the line,
Courtney Hollander was on her game.
Hollander scored seven of her game-high 13 points during the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon, and
Julia Haining came up with a blocked shot at one end of the court that led to her own lay-up at the other end as Seattle Pacific kept its women's basketball record perfect with a 54-48 non-conference victory against Cal State Los Angeles.
The win in Brougham Pavilion moved the Falcons, ranked No. 23 in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll, to 8-0. That is now the fourth-best start in school history. The last time they won their first eight was at the start of the 2007-08 season.
It also was the 399th career victory for head coach
Julie Heisey.
"This was a great team win," Heisey said. "Different people stepped up at different times – it was a tag-team effort. Our defense kept us in the game. They definitely controlled the tempo, but in the first half, we were able to go to a zone, and that changed things a lot for us, And getting out and running, we were able to do some good things."
Junior forward Hollander (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden Christian HS) had nine rebounds to go along with her 13 points. She was the only Falcon in double-figure scoring, but of the 10 players who saw action, nine got into the scoring column. Junior guard
Jordan McPhee (Normandy Park, Wash. / Mount Rainier HS) and senior guard
Rachel Shim (Sammamish, Wash. / Skyline HS) added eight points apiece.
SPU carried a 37-34 lead into the fourth quarter. Cal State L.A. (5-4) got as close as one at 39-38 on a turnaround two-footer from the right of the hoop by Alma Serna with 5:51 left in the game.
Courtney Hollander
Hollander answered with two makes: a 3-pointer from the left of the lane on a pass from Shim, and a turnaround eight-footer from straight in front after McPhee hit her with a pass, pushing the lead back to six at 44-38.
Up 44-41, Seattle Pacific then rang up eight in a row to forge the first double-digit lead of the day for either side.
Capping it was sophomore center Haining (Lynnwood, Wash. / Inglemoor HS). First, she blocked a shot under the hoop by Alma. Senior guard
Stacey Lukasiewicz grabbed the rebound, Haining broke downcourt, and Lukasiewicz fired the ball to her under the hoop for a lay-in and a 52-41 advantage with 1:44 remaining.
Cal State L.A. rang up seven points in the next 90 seconds to get back within four at 52-48 and 11.3 seconds still on the clock. Shim buried two free throws at 9.9 seconds, and SPU's pressure defense forced the Eagles to use all but the final three seconds before firing up a long 3 that bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
With Haining leading the way, SPU's reserves came up with 18 points and 12 rebounds, along with four assists – two each for senior
Brianne Lasconia and junior
Lindsay Lee.
"Julia was great coming off the bench, Bri came off the bench and did good things, Lindsay hit that 3 in the first half, and
Hannah Rodrigues made a difference when she was out there," Heisey said. "The bench was really important tonight."
L.A., coached by Basketball Hall of Famer and 1984 Olympic gold medalist Cheryl Miller, came in having won five of its last six games after an 0-2 start. The Eagles led by seven points late in the first quarter and were up six at the in the second before Seattle Pacific got back into it.
Down 26-23 on a Serna lay-in at the outset of the second half, the Falcons ran off 11 straight points to go up 34-26 and never trailed again.
Da'Jah Jackson and Samanth Lee had 11 points apiece for L.A. Rikke Fabricius, who averaged team highs of 14.5 points and 5.4 rebounds, was limited to six points and three boards on 2-of-9 shooting before she fouled out with 2:36 left.
