Seattle Pacific's
Maria Hundley celebrated Senior Night by breaking the school's 11-year-old all-around record, and junior
Kristi Hayashida won the balance beam with a 9.90 – just the 12th gymnast in school history to score in that range on any event -- as the Falcons closed their 2016 home schedule against the University of Washington.
The Huskies won the meet, 196.600-193.450 in Brougham Pavilion. SPU's score was its third in the 193s, and its second-highest of the season, trailing only the 193.900 on Feb. 19 at Northern Illinois.
Hundley (Littleton, Colo.) finished with a four-event total of 39.35 points. That included a career-high score of 9.825 on the floor exercise, an event she had not done collegiately until this season. Her previous high was 9.775, set on Feb. 12 in Brougham against UC Davis. Hundley's Monday mark gave her fourth place.
She also had second-place scores of 9.85 on both the vault and uneven bars. She was fifth on the beam at 9.825.
Hundley's all-around total was one-tenth better than the old SPU record of 39.25, set by Debra Huss on March 19, 2005.
"Maria came close a couple weeks ago with a 39.2. So it was in our mind what the record was, which most records we can't really remember," SPU coach
Laurel Tindall said.
"She was almost on track to get 9.85s all around and then one beam judge and one floor judge decided to only give her a 9.8 and wreck that 39.4 she would have had."
The 39.35 points ties Hundley for the seventh-highest all-around total in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation history, a conference that is comprised primarily of NCAA Division I members.
Hundley adds the all-around record to an already lengthy list of accomplishments. She is the most decorated gymnast in SPU history, having won five USAG Collegiate national championships. No other Falcon has won more than four. She won back-to-back beam and bars titles, in 2014 and 2015, and was the nation's to vaulter in 2014.
It was an uncommon day of the week to host a meet for the Falcons, who usually entertain opponents on Fridays or Saturdays.
"This gave us an extra meet in the season," Tindall said of the rare Monday affair with the crosstown Huskies.
"We like to compete at UW before finals, so that we're not on the road and then coming back and taking finals. We always try to schedule UW that weekend, so it worked out for them to come here and this was just kind of a bonus getting an extra meet early in the week."
The two teams clash again on Saturday at 6 p.m., changing venues to the Huskies' Hec Edmundson Pavilion. They will be joined by Denver for the final regular-season meet.

With her 9.90 on the beam, Hayashida (Mililani, Hawaii) eclipsed her previous high of 9.875, set at last season's MPSF meet.
In addition, Hayashida's score tied for the second-highest in school history. Hundley (2015) and Erica Thompson (1994) also had 9.90s. The Falcon record is 9.925 set by Alison Siegel in 2001.
"Kristi had a great routine," exclaimed Tindall. "She got back to her regular form because she's had a couple rough beam routines in the last few weeks. She hasn't been hitting real well, just been a little wobbly or having a fall.
"So we were glad to see her get back and get some confidence again in that. She was so solid, she didn't really have anything to deduct for tonight."
Kristi HayashidaHayashida garnered All-America acclaim on the beam last year after collecting the bronze medal at the national championship meet.
Led by Hundley's 9.825, Seattle Pacific enjoyed its best night of the year on the floor exercise, finishing with 48.725 points. That topped its 48.700 from the Northern Illinois meet.
The Falcons tied their season high on the vault with 48.55. Freshman
Maryanna Peterson (Tukwila, Wash. / Kent Mountain View HS) posted a career-high 9.625, and sophomore
Brittany Atchison (Biloxi, Miss.) tied her career high at 9.575.
SPU logged its second-highest bars total of the season at 48.45, its third time in the 48s. Along with Hundley's 9.85, sophomore
Ariana Harger (Castro Valley, Calif.) tied her career high with a 9.575.
Alison Northey of Washington won the vault (9.875), floor (9.857) and all-around (39.500). Her UW teammate, Kaitlyn Duranczyk, placed first on the bars (9.875), and Joslyn Goings was third in the all-around (39.075).
The Falcons gymnasts begin postseason action on Mar. 19 with their six-team conference meet. The MPSF Championships take place in Sacramento, Calif.
