LONG BEACH, Calif. -- School record? Done.
A trip to the NCAAs? All but done.
In barely more than a minute on Saturday afternoon, Seattle Pacific senior
Jalen Tims took care of both tasks in the 400-meter hurdles at the Beach Invitational track and field meet.
Barely 24 hours after breaking into the 1:00s for the first time, Tims went even faster, clocking 1:00.06 on the just-renovated Jack Rose Track at Long Beach State University.
That erased the SPU standard of 1:00.10, which had stood since Jenny Vale set it in 1993.

Jalen Tims
"It's definitely a good feeling. I've been looking at that record board for two years," said Tims (Portland, Ore.) who transferred to SPU ahead of the 2014-15 school year after competing previously at Clackamas Community College (2012) and Lane CC (2014). "I glanced at the clock after the last hurdle and saw 58, so I knew I was going to be in the ball park."
It also moved Tims (Portland, Ore.) up to No. 4 on the national qualifying list as of Saturady evening and went a long way toward guaranteeing her a ticket to Bradenton, Fla., for the Division II national championships next month.
At least 20 athletes are accepted for each individual event at NCAAs. That means 17 would have to run faster than Tims between now and the mid-May declaration day to push her out of the top 20. Last year, the 20th and final entry got in with a 1:00.54. Tims' Saturday time would have been the 17th seed on the final 2015 list.
Tims finished sixth overall among the 69 competitors in Saturday's race, and won her section by nearly a full second over runner-up Morganne Hill from the University of Washington (1:00.92).
"I really wanted under one minute, but I'm going to take each victory one at a time," Tims said. "When I came into the season, I had three things I wanted to do: Get the record, get under one minute, and get to NCAAs.
"I've checked one off the list. I hope with time and a little more work, the last two will come."
And, Tims got to check off that first item in her own racing shoes. On Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational some 30 miles away in Azusa, Tims logged her first 1:00 time (1:00.87) using a pair of borrowed shoes in a larger size after hers went missing just before race time. (Falcons teammate
Jahzelle Ambus inadvertently had picked them up.)
MORE BIG MARKS FOR LUQUIN, BRANNAN
Â
Maliea Luquin
SPU teammate and fellow hurdler
Maliea Luquin completed an outstanding weekend of her own with a personal-best and NCAA provisional time in the 100-meter hurdles. Luquin (Portland, Ore.) came across the finish line in 14.13 seconds, beating the 14.30 that was both the provisional standard and her PR.
Luquin was hovering just inside the top 20 as of Saturday evening. On Friday, she PR'd and made provisional in the 400 hurdles with a 1:01.93 at the Clay Invite. She had never even broken 1:03 prior to that, her best being 1:03.45 last April 18 at the Beach.

Kyra Brannan
Junior
Kyra Brannan completed a solid weekend's work with a second consecutive PR in the 100-meter dash, and a new PR in the 200. Brannan (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS) went a team-leading 12.19 in the 100. On Friday at the Clay, Brannan clocked 12.34, beating her previous best of 12.37.
Later, she finished Saturday's 200 in 25.24 seconds. That was well below her previous best of 25.47 set at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships last May. She also PR'd in the long jump on Friday, making NCAA provisional with a leap of 18 feet, 10 3/4 inches.
Seattle Pacific's stretch of April road trips concludes next Saturday at the Spike Arlt Invitational in Ellensburg. Competition at Tomlinson Stadium on the Central Washington campus begins at 10 a.m. with field events. Track races start at 11:00.
