CORVALLIS, Ore. –
Darian Burns tied for third place on the vault, helping Seattle Pacific finish with its finest event result of the Oregon State triangular women's gymnastics meet Saturday en route to a third-place finish at Gill Coliseum.
The host Beavers compiled an impressive first-place score of 196.900 and Northern Illinois was second with 192.850. Both of those are NCAA Division I competitors.
Division II SPU tallied a season-high score of 189.700. That was 0.275 points higher than the mark of 189.425 set in the season opener on Jan. 13 at home.
A freshman from Atlanta, Georgia, Burns received a score of 9.80 on the vault to finish in a four-way tie for third place. She improved upon the fourth-place score of 9.775 earned last week in her collegiate debut.
The Falcons finished the meet on the vault and it was by far their best event. All five counting scores were 9.575 or better to total 48.450, nearly one full point superior to their performance on the same apparatus last week.
Along with Burns' 9.80, SPU's counting vaults came from
Ariana Harger (9.725),
Lauren Glover (9.725),
Itzia San Roman (9.625) and
Breanna Beltran (9.575).
Oregon State's Kaytianna McMillan posted a winning all-around score of 39.575, including first-place efforts on the vault (9.90), uneven bars (9.90) and floor exercise (9.925). She placed second on the balance beam (9.85), an event won by OSU teammate, Dani Dessaints (9.900).
The Falcons did not have a four-event competitor, but a pair of seniors were stellar in multiple events. Glover (Fort Collins, Colo.) scored 9.725 on the vault and was the team's top floor performer with a 12th-place mark of 9.700.
Kristi Hayashida (Mililani, Hi.) was SPU's highest scorer on the beam, placing seventh with a 9.725. She displayed the form that earned a silver medal at last year's national championship meet.
Also producing well in dual events was freshman
Miyuki Matsune (West Covina, Calif.), who scored 9.70 on the beam, 9.50 on the floor and had a career-high 9.375 on the bars.
Harger (Castro Valley, Calif.) competed for the first time this season to good results. The SPU junior received scores of 9.725 on the vault and 9.60 on the beam. The defending national champion on the floor had to touch a hand down after her final pass, limiting her score to 9.225 in that event.
SPU started the meet on the bars and had to count a couple falls in a score of 46.00.
Tracie Villanueva (Kaneohe, Hi.) and
Maryanna Peterson (Kent Mountain View HS) tied for team-high honors with matching scores of 9.600 that placed 11th overall.
The second rotation had the Falcons on the beam and their team total of 47.725 also included a fall. Their third event was the floor, where they achieved a season-high 47.525 points.
The Falcons gymnasts return to Seattle for the next two weeks. They host Hamiline University on Friday at 7 p.m. before entertaining Air Force on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. in their final regular-season home meet. Both meets take place at Brougham Pavilion, where SPU will host the USAG Collegiate Championships, April 7-9.
