SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific Falcons got something from everyone – and another win go to along with it.
Lindsay Lee pumped in a career-high 16 points, and was one of four players in double figures as 16th-ranked SPU rolled to a 78-52 non-conference victory against Biola on Wednesday night in Brougham Pavilion.
All 13 players on the active roster saw action in the home-opening game. Of those, nine scored, 12 grabbed at least one rebound, and 10 dished out at least one assist to help Seattle Pacific climb to 5-0.
"Everyone got to contribute in different ways, and that was good," head coach
Julie Heisey said. "Biola is a good team. They beat Northwest Nazarene, and the played Saint Martin's to within two at one point on Tuesday (the Saints ultimately won by 10)."
This is the second straight year and the fourth time in the past five years that Seattle Pacific has won its first five games. It went 7-0 in 2013, then 6-0 in 2014 and 11-0 in 2016.
"I'm just excited that were 5-0 for in-region games," Heisey said. "It was nice to play at home, and nice to have everyone play and contribute."
Lindsay Lee
Senior guard Lee (Spokane, Wash./ Lewis & Clark HS) beat her old career high of 12 points, set this past Jan. 19 at home against Alaska Anchorage. She drained 5 of 7 from the field on Wednesday, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and buried both of her free throws.
Also popping in career high was junior guard
Jaylee Albert, who came off the bench for 12. All of those were from downtown, as she nailed 4 of 8 from behind the arc. That was Albert's first college game in double-figure scoring, as her previous best was nine, which she had reached twice.
Jordan McPhee added 14 points, and
Courtney Hollander chipped in 13.
The Falcons scored the first eight points of the game – a trey from Lee, one from McPhee, and then a lay-in McPhee – and never looked back. In fact, when Brenna Khaw's finally got Biola onto the board, making it 8-2, that was as close as the score got for the rest of the night.
SPU responded with a run of nine straight points for a 17-2 bulge, and the margin didn't dip below double digits the rest of the way.
"I like the way we started, holding them to six points in the first quarter," Heisey said. "We gave up 18 points in the second quarter, which was too many, but part of that was we played more people."
BY THE NUMBERS
-- The Falcons had another sterling night at the free throw line, hitting 91.7 percent (11 of 12). That was their second night in the 90s this season. Their first one was the school-record 95.8 percent (23 of 24) in the season-opener against Humboldt State on Nov. 10.
-- SPU hit just 27 of 67 from the field (40.3 percent), but had assists on 20 of those 27 baskets – a rate of 74 percent. Redshirt senior guard
Rachel Shim had five of those, tying her career high.
-- The three primary ball handlers had some impressive assist-to-turnover ratios: five assists and just one turnover for Shim, three and zero for Lee, three and one for
Jaylee Albert.
-- Speaking of turnovers, the Falcons cleaned things up considerably after halftime, with just three, that after committing nine during the first half. The final total of 12 was the second-lowest of the season. The only better mark was a mere four against UC San Diego last Saturday.
-- Seattle Pacific owned the boards, 45-31, with senior
Julia Haining's 10 leading the way. That was her second double-digit outing of the year.
