SACRAMENTO, Calif. –
Ariana Harger tied for top honors on the balance beam, placed third in the all-around and was fourth on both the vault and floor exercise Saturday for the Seattle Pacific women's gymnastics team which finished third at the Sacramento State triangular in The Nest.
Harger received a score of 9.750 on the beam to tie for first with Sacramento's Caitlin Soliwoda. She scored even higher in her fourth-place performances with a 9.850 on the floor and 9.800 on vault.
A 9.475 on the uneven bars gave Harger a third-place all-around total of 38.875. That is the SPU junior's finest four-event tally of the season, improving on a 38.725 from Feb. 17. Harger's career-high mark is 39.025.
SPU freshman
Darian Burns (Atlanta, Ga.) was fifth in the all-around with 37.375 points. Sacramento gymnasts claimed first and fourth place in the all-around, Soliwoda winning with a 39.225 score and Lauren Rice with 38.375 points. Alexis Brown of UC Davis recorded a second-place total of 38.975.
Brown was the top floor performer (9.900) and tied for first on the bars (9.850) with Courtney Soliwoda of Sacramento State. The vault also ended in a tie with co-victors Julia Konner of Sacramento and UCD's Katy Nogaki each scoring 9.850.
The NCAA Division II Falcons compiled 191.725 team points, their third-highest total of the year. The other two teams are Division I competitors. UC Davis won the meet with a score of 194.950 and host Sacramento State was second at 193.450.
Along with Harger, two other Falcons cracked the top-seven among beam competitors.
Kristi Hayashida tied for fourth with a mark of 9.675 and
Itzia San Roman tied for seventh at 9.625.
Harger was SPU's top scorer in every category except the bars. Senior
Breanna Beltran (Modesto, Calif.) achieved a score of 9.725 to tie for eighth.
The Falcons opened on the floor and surpassed their previous cumulative season best by 1.50 points. They combined for 48.725 points led by Harger's 9.850. Burns earned a career-high 9.825.
All five counting floor scores for SPU were above 9.55, including a 9.775 from
Lauren Glover, 9.700 for San Roman and 9.575 from Hayashida.
Darian Burns
The Falcons then rotated to the vault and totaled a fine 48.250 on that apparatus behind Harger's 9.800. Burns had the team's second-best vault, 9.675, while Beltran and Glover tied for No. 3 at 9.650.
SPU snuck into second place after the third rotation, claiming a slim 144.600 to 144.500 edge over Sacramento State with UC Davis leading at 146.200. Beltran's 9.725 was the Falcons only score above 9.55, but still they recorded their second-highest bars total of the season at 47.625.
That margin was erased during the final rotation when the Falcons faltered on the beam. Their team score of 47.125 was their lowest of the year and snapped a string of five consecutive beam scores above 48.00.
Scoring on the beam was low overall, enabling the trio of Falcons to finish among the top seven, led by Harger's victorious 9.75 routine.
The SPU gymnasts won't travel far next week for their fifth straight road meet. They compete across town at Alaska Airlines Arena for a dual meet with Washington on Saturday, March 1 at 4 p.m.
