SEATTLE – The Bridgeport Purple Knights had the top individual score on three of the four events on Friday afternoon, and won the first session of the team semifinals at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships.
The Knights posted a season-high total of 195.575 points in Brougham Pavilion at Seattle Pacific University. That topped their previous season-best of 195.050, set on March 10 in a meet at Arizona State.
It also was the second-highest score among USAG teams this year, bettered only by the 196.000 of Texas Woman's University in a regular-season quad meet.
Joining Bridgeport for Saturday night's team finals in Brougham will be Cornell. The Big Red grabbed the second of the two qualifying spots by scoring 194.200.
Bridgeport, which shared the 2009 national championship with Cornell, then won five straight from 2010-14, was led by senior Kimberly Stewart. She posted the session's highest score on any event with a 9.925 on the floor.
Stewart was one of three Knights in the 9.9 neighborhood. Fellow senior Brianna Comport was right behind Stewart on the floor with a 9.900, and freshman Maya Reimers had a 9.900 to lead the session on the balance beam.
Thomara Powell-Brown, a Bridgeport sophomore, had the best uneven parallel bars score of the afternoon with a 9.800.
Kara Witgen of Air Force was tops on the vault at 9.850.
Cornell had the team lead after the first rotation, scoring 48.775 on the floor, while Bridgeport totaled 48.625 on the bars.
The Purple Knights then racked up 48.950 on the beam – the lowest of their five counting scores was 9.725 – to move into first place, and stayed there the rest of the day. They bolstered the advantage to more than a full point ahead of Cornell with 49.300 on the floor. That was the highest total for any of the four teams in any event, and was the only one in the 49-point range.
Saturday's team finals begin at 7:00 p.m. The other two spots will be filled from Friday's second semifinal session, which features two-time defending champion Lindenwood of Missouri, along with Texas Woman's, Brown, Yale, and host Seattle Pacific.
