SEATTLE – Andrea Fizer travelled all the way from Atlanta for the first time to see her daughter compete in Seattle. Darian Burns made her mother's 2,200-mile journey worthwhile.

A sophomore at Seattle Pacific, Burns topped 39 points on Friday for the first time in her career to win the all-around title. She was also victorious in the vault and tied for first on the floor exercise.

Burns wasn't SPU's only standout as teammate Itzia San Roman took first place on the balance team, leading the Falcons to a season-high score and second place in their triangular meet against Sacramento State and Alaska Anchorage in Brougham Pavilion.

SPU finished with 192.825 points. That was a full three points better than last week's 189.200 performance at Sacramento State. Friday night's total topped the previous season high of 191.325 from the opener against UC Davis on Jan. 12, also in Brougham.

Sacramento won with a combined score of 194.075, and Anchorage was third with 191.950.

Burns' all-around total of 39.150 tied for first place with Caitlin Soliwoda of Sacramento. It also wiped out her previous best of 38.775, which she set on Feb. 2 at UC Davis. It is the sixth-highest score in school history. The record is 39.400 by Maria Hundley at the 2016 USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals.

"That's an awesome all-around score," SPU coach Laurel Tindall exclaimed. "Her mom was here this week so I told Darian that her mom just has to come every week and she'll get a lot more 39s."

Burns is the sixth Falcon to reach the 39-point plateau in all-around competition, including both of her assistant coaches. But Burns will have bragging rights in the SPU gym as her newly-minted, four-event total topped the 39.100 turned in by Coach Sarah Jean (Sullivan) Marshall in 2007 and the 39.025 of Deni (Boswell) Maxwell in 1998.

The individual wins by Burns and junior San Roman were the first of the season for the Falcons. Burns took the vault with a career-best 9.825, then finished her night on the floor with a 9.850.

"Darian has been paying a lot more attention to her landings on vault and really trying to stick them, so that helps," said Tindall. "Beam has been coming along really well. She's hit almost every meet on beam this year, which is an event she wasn't in very often last year."

Itzia San Roman
San Roman nailed her beam performance to earn a 9.825, edging out Burns, who tied for second with a career-high 9.800. San Roman surpassed 38 points for the first time, placing third in the all-around with a score of 38.650. Falcons freshman McKenna Zimmermann had a fourth-place total of 38.575, her high mark as a collegian.

"That was a really good meet. They hit really well and finished with a great floor set," Tindall said. "We had some really good performances and we were at a 48 in three events as a team."

Seattle Pacific's totals of 48.575 on the vault, 48.350 on the beam, and 48.525 on the floor were all season highs.

The only event title not claimed by an SPU gymnast was the uneven bars. Sacramento State teammates Jackie Sampson and Caitlin Soliwoda shared top honors with matching marks of 9.800.

VAULT
The Falcon nailed their vault performances better than they have all winter, with four personal-best scores out of the six competitors, and a season-high team total.

Sophomore Zahra Lawal started it with a 9.60, beating her old mark of 9.575 from two weeks ago at Air Force. Freshman McKenna Zimmerman immediately followed suit, posting a 9.775. That topped the 9.750 she put up in Brougham on Jan. 26 against Lindenwood and Wisconsin Eau Claire.

Autumn Huskie, another freshman, put a 9.725 into the book, breaking her previous high of 9.675, set just last week at Sacramento State. Finally, sophomore Burns came up her meet-winning 9.825, erasing her old high mark of 9.800 set last season.

Seattle Pacific's 48.575 beat its previous season high of 48.250 in the Jan. 26 triangular meet.

Zimmerman, Burns, and San Roman all rang up their second PBs of the night. Zimmerman opened the rotation with a 9.775. That bettered her old mark of 9.750 from the Jan. 26 meet. Burns came through with a 9.800, good for second place and topping the 9.750 she had at UC Davis three weeks ago.

Then it was San Roman's turn, earning a 9.825 to win the event and beat her old high of 9.800 from last season.

With four no-fall routines out of six, SPU wound up with 48.350 points, its second straight week in the 48s and ahead of last week's 48.125.

Junior Kylee Gauna opened the rotation with a 9.65 that was just a notch better than the 9.625 she posted at Boise State on Jan. 19. Jadacie Dunst, a freshman, tied her personal-best score with a 9.65.
